We had a telephone/power pole knocked down Friday night here, leaving us with no power, phone, internet or even water (pump for the well=electric) all day yesterday, so I decided to grab some of the down time for some modeling. I was going to finally get started on the Marek Claude, but I decided I needed something easier to relax with.
This is MM "Mustang" (no numerical ID in the title) from 1979;
15292
My scanning and printing went haywire and the colors came out all wrong, but I'm forging ahead anyway!:o This is my first P-51 and I hope it's not the entirely wrong choice to start with!
15293
The bulkhead formers are almost all undersized, with two exceptions; one fits perfectly and one is too large. Adjustments made, the fuselage came more or less together;
15294
This kit has no interior and opaque paper "glass", but I can't help myself and I'm going to do a clear canopy, so I quickly scribbled some marking on the otherwise white cockpit area;
15295
The tail went together quite well and came out evenly;
15296
I should point out that the wings use a tab and slot technique that kinda works;
15297
The wings went on very easily. When these simpler kits actually fit, they can be a real joy;
15298
And much of this kit fits well. An area I usually have difficulty with, the center fuselage bottom where the wing sections meet, fit like a glove!
15299
But now that the power's back on, its back to work. Hopefully more on this tonight!

Fast work, and good, Chris! Especially working under difficult conditions.

WOW!
This brings back some good memories...
I built this kit ages ago, right when it was published. Of course immediately painted it silver as the only camo scheme I could imagine the Mustang in :rolleyes:
Did the clear canopy from overlapping acetate strips but only painted the cockpit area in black....
I'm really looking forward to see this kit completed.

Had a few hours break from a very rigorous schedule these days, so I rushed to finish this one up.
The propellers are kind of interesting;

This may be a common practice, but I haven't come across it before. The longer strip at the base gets rolled into the blade section and the shorter strip glues over it to hold it. The rolling creates a nice curve in the base of the prop. The second half of the prop is glued into place over the rolled base which forms the nice curve there. Not sure why this practice isn't more commonplace, it works nicely, IMHO.
I tried to make the canopy as sections of clear plastic glued together as it sounds like you did in your youth, Mike, but It wound up being easier to make a wood form and heating and forming plastic over it. I wound up with a piece that has some fogging in the top center. I'm sure I could have gotten a better one, but I had to decide whether to finish the canopy or the entire model today. I went with finishing the model;
15620
Not quite sure this is the most accurate P-51 model around.;) But it was fun!

Simple as it is, if I was a kid and got this together, I would have loved it!

It might not get an 'A' for accuracy but it definitely gets one for assembly. Lovely build!

Great work, as always, Chris! You sure can turn 'em out in style!

Very clean model. It's therapeutic sometimes to not overly obsess about absolute accuracy, and just concentrate on the joy of the build. It's obvious that you had a good time with this one.

Nice model! As far as the prop method, both the MM Beaufort and the Modelik BF109 had similar methods (at least concerning rolling a strip on one piece), so it's still used.

Marek uses something similar on some of his kits.
