Well there's no rhyme or reason to my building schedule. http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif I figure that's why you have a schedule. So you can trash it. http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif

Well anyway, I saw that the New L-19 Bird Dog, from FiddlersGreen had a Civil Air Patrol version. Well my brother is active and an officer with the CAP. So, I decided to do this one for him. :D

http://64.136.20.22/2426577_m.jpg
The first problem: I should have used 110 card stock instead of 67 http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif
http://64.136.20.22/2426578_m.jpg
I did the side windows and over head windows by tracing the windows on a clear plastic sheet and cutting them out. Then I applied clear packing tape to the inside of the windows and then placed the plastic windows on the outside.

And another one bites the dust. http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Really nice job. I do wish Fiddler's Green would use finer lines on their models, it would enhance them greatly. Your build it excellent. The windshield really sets it off.

Excellent upgrade, as always, Bob. I'd love to see a natural aluminum PiperPA-18 Supercub in the late 1950s' markings of the Parkville, Maryland, CAP Squadron, in the back seat of which, I spent many happy hours.

That look very nice. I buy these and the P-39 Airacobra to make

The plastic over the paper? :/

Next time try thin doublesided transparent adhesive tape and glue the windshields from inside...

Otherwise a very nice plane and the windshields make it stand out. I bet your brother is happy.

Hey Bob! I don't think it's too bad that way, those front fg windscreens are hard to make. (note diversion here) Don- is there a nice super cub out there to do that you've seen? -The fg is not really perfect as one of Chip's early designs with thicker lines (good call Zathros)-although is a fun and quick build..:)

Thanks guys & Lala,

Sorry about the windshield:( Actually shortly after I took the pictures the windshield came off:rolleyes: Great build...except I was having a really hard time with nose cowl. When I got it the best I could there was still a gap at the top:confused: Probably wouldn't be noticable with the paper windscreen. Anyway it was interfering with the windshield fit and I went ahead and attached the windshield. Very badly as I can now see from the picture, Well the windshield is still off, can't get all the gap out of the cowl so working on modifing another one. Will shoot another pic when & if I get it fixed:D

You can print the windshield area again and glue over the plastic and on the model - it can work - paper will glue to paper well enough to keep the plastic between.

Also try bookbinding glue...

Thanks for the tips lehcyfer,
Another interesting thing happened while doing this model.
While printing the fuselage my printer cartridge started to run out of ink. Needless to say the fuselage was not good enough to use to finish the model.
Not wanting to waste card stock I turned the card over and printed the fuselage on the reverse side. Low and behold it printed the fuselage almost exactly where the one on the other side was:eek: If you look closely at the third picture you can see the printing on the inside of the cockpit.:D I didn't even realize it until I was assembling the fuselage;) How Kool:cool:

Still working on the nose cowling:(

Bob-
Great job! I do alot of the FG models with interiors - Can't help myself :o) Do you have a source or photos you copy for inst. panel, seats controls, floor? Mine are scratch-built out of plain carkstock. I like what you do with the FG stuff.

Hey 30-60,

I can't help myself either:D
There are several FG models that have insturment panels as well as others I have collected from other sites. I've told some of the designers it would be great if they would start adding instrument panels to the new models. Have to wait and see:confused: The one in the Bird Dog I had to add to because it wasn't quite wide enough.
The floors control sticks and or yokes and seats I, like you, scratch build;)
I started out building the regular models, then started building them over with clear canopies, and now building them over doing detailed cockpits. Will it ever end:rolleyes:
Would love to see some of your builds:cool:

Bill,
For FG Piper/Cessna/etc. windscreens I pre-curve and do a lot of dry fitting. Then trim for best appearance (regardless of positioning lines on the model). Most require some crimping and torturing to lay the top edge flat. No real tricks, just takes a fair amount of time.

Bob is doing very nice work here.

Some results with FG models are posted on the "Yogi's builds" thread - around pages 1 and 4.

I can't imagine it being any better than that, Bob!

Great model, and a funny story about the two-sided printing.

Bob - what do you use to attach canopies & what kinda clear palstic do you use? I've been using Elmer's or Alene's and blister-pak off of items I've bought at the store.

Thanks guys:)

Don, how'd the model show go?

30-06, I usually use clear packing tape for most all windows, especially the side windows and bubble canopies. If you go to one of My web sites, and click on canopy tutorial, I try and explain that method. I also use bubble wrap and I get sheets of clear plastic from craft shops. Besides tape, I also use testors plastic glue to attach windows and bubble canopies.;) For this model I actually taped two pieces of clear packing tape together, for the front and rear windows, and attached with plastic glue.:D

Great-looking Bird Dog, Bob!

Is that your tutorial on making canopies on the FG site?

Wyvern,
I wasn't aware that it was on the site yet. Chip had requested it and said he wanted to put it on his site. So I just went and checked it out and yep it's my tutorial. A movie would be nice but I have no way to do that:(
