a JET powered School Bus?
" no Mom, I don't wanna get to School any quicker!"

..................................................

plane mc has done his homework!....

I got this Monogram Model Kit in 1970!
I can still remember it clearly!
Tom Daniel's designs have got to be the best far out customs of the time!
but this was probably my most favorite!...

http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/kits/images/CarMonogram/mono-scoolbusbox.JPG

I've got a few Tom Daniel's designs on my list.
Some might be a little too tricky for me to turn into paper,
but the S'Cool Bus was definately a good choice!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/ScoolBus01600px.jpg

This is my biggest "Kool Wheelz" creation so far!
Almost didn't fit on the Model Page.
And since I need to keep these models restricted to one page it had to be done!
I was gonna shrink it down a little bit, but I'm doing my best to keep a consistent size/scale
and the S'Cool Bus is on par (scale) with Snake and Mongoose and VW Drag Truck.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/ScoolBus00600px.jpg

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/ScoolBus02600px.jpg

Anyone who remembers the first issue release of this model, will notice that my model
does not have the orange translucent windows
with all the cartoon kids looking out.
I was going to attempt to recreate the windows,
but I just couldn't find a good enough photo or scan of the window artwork to reproduce.
Plain orange windows looked terrible.
Then I found some photos of modern build of this Bus,
and the builder had used some blue film for the windows allowing you to see the outline of the interior parts.
And so, thats why my rendition has blue windows.

Give me a day or two, and I will get the Model page finished.

I'm with ya' Kevin. My local club is doing a group build of Rommels Rod (plastic), and I would love to show up with one in paper. They'd respect that!

airdave

First I am doing my best to stick with my original criteria...
1. The models are to be simplified versions of the vehicles and as simple as possible to build.
2. The 'scale" size is supposed to be consistent and the models are restricted to one page (and yes, that must include my banner and graphics)
3. The designs also have to suit my limited design abilities.

Rommels Rod has the same issues that a few other considerations have presented...and the same problems I faced with the Munster Koach.

And now, the same problems again with the Monkee Mobile!

Open cockpit, passenger areas...interior...seats....

Too much detail to design into these small scale kits,
too much detail to try and squeeze onto one page of parts
and too much detail making it a much more complicated build.

I have to find ways to eliminate certain things and simplify the model
but Rommels Rod might not be possible for me to do this.
I'll take another look at it and see if I can come up with an "airdave version"...but no promises.

hehe I wasn't kidding

but this has to be the fastest design I have ever done!!
all printed and ready to cut...
test build tonight!

theres a lot of parts...almost wouldn't fit on the one page

(I'm hoping it is large enough that I can shrink it a little more.
I'll be frustrated if its too small!)

so even if it goes together okay,
I'm not sure how quickly it will get built.
I'll watch some TV and put in a couple of hours on it tonight.

...report tomorrow...

airdave
09-02-2010, 09:22 PM
okay, theres GOOD NEWS and there's BAD NEWS

GOOD NEWS...was able to get 50-60% of the model constructed tonight.
Went together pretty much as expected...no super surprises.
Like a normal prototype build, got a list of changes and fixes,
but the model looks like what its supposed to be!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/RommelRodprototype.jpg

Now the BAD NEWS....

Model is a bit large, in relative scale, to my other mini models and therefore demands a reduction in size.

There are also a number of parts missing (things I forgot, things I want to add...)
but there just isn't room on the page for any more...which again, means size reduction.

But...there are already some pretty small parts
and some areas a little more complicated than my usual "Kool Wheelz projects
and I am very opposed to reducing the size and making this model any more difficult.

As a result I am now considering a complete redesign
to try and simplify the model more and reduce the number of parts.
If all else fails...I will not include this model in the Kool Wheelz collection
and just release it as a fun model (maybe bump up the scale, add a second page of parts, etc)
...but right now, my goal is to keep it in line with the rest of the collection.

I wish I had more positive news, but it looks like this is gonna be a weekend project, and another test build after that...
stay tuned guys!

KCStephens

Thanks Dave. It really looks GREAT. I'm sure your final design will be outstanding!

Texman
09-03-2010, 05:09 AM
I agree, that is looking sweet. I appreciate your wanting to keep it in scale and one page like the other kits, but to me, this would be better as the "bumped up two page fun model". It seems there is to much gorgeous detail to let it be lost as a smaller kit.

Just me sayin, thank you either way!

.....................................

ROMMEL'S ROD has been completely overhauled.

I made a number of changes, handled many adjustments, tweaked a few parts, moved a few, replaced some
and rearranged the page without having to lose any size!
Only thing I may lose is some of the build tips and directions I usually try to include on the Model pages.
Just not gonna be any extra room on this one!

The new kit is printed and is the project for the weekend...
if all goes well, I may just have a kit by Sunday or Monday?!

...............................................

I wondered why nobody has responded to the last post regarding the completion of Rommel's Rod?
And it appears to be because....the post isn't here?!!

This is very odd...I posted a big announcement with three photos...and yet its not here?!?!
I know I posted it! @$#&$#! I know I did!

anyway...Rommel's Rod Link is up on the site!
Unfortunately mediafire is down for some reason, haven't been able to get on there all day.
So links don't work and I can't upload the Rod model.
I'm sure it will be up within a few hours...maybe by tomorrow?

............................................

Monkee Mobile is in the works....lots of frustration from this one.
Too many curves and intricate angles. Too much interior.
Not sure how this one will end up.

In the meantime...I smell Pies!

so...did someone mention Rommel's Rod?!!!!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/RommelsRod03600px.jpg

I completed the model a couple of days ago...for some reason the post has disappeared, because I swear, I did post it!

Quite happy with how the model turned out...had me worried for a while.
Not my best, but partly because I am not a real big fan of this vehicle.

I mean...I love Tom Daniel's designs. I love Custom Cars and old Plastic Models.
When this came out, I was big into WW2 Military stuff!
and yet, this particular model didn't do it for me.

Guess I didn't really see the "custom" aspect.
(Although if you look up Hitler's G4/W31 Mercedes Staff car, you can see where Tom Daniel's got his inspiration)

Anyway, here it is...lots of parts on this one.
A little tricky design.
I might have to post a build thread if people can't figure it out.
Not much room left to add extras...I included some small flags for the front fenders
and an Ammo(?) case sitting on the rear fender.
I pulled some Jerry Cans out my Diorama Accessory kit for the other side!
(no, they aren't included)

oh..and theres a Machine Gun for the front windshield... a last minute addition, so I didn't get it built.

I have been trying all day to log on there and upload the new Rod.

Dave-

Just catching up on this.

"Limited design abilities"?

Don't sell yourself short! Your designs result in nicely-finished products, as well as looking inviting enough to encourage anyone to try and build them.

IMHO (or not-so-humble-O), that's way more important than having a large part count. Sort of a "doing more with less" idea.

Glenn

I agree completely, imaginative design over part count is what I shoot for!

well, I may have sorted out the Mediafire issue...
I ran a trace last night, checked the IP connection, trying to verify if there was any ISP blocking (as there sometimes is with file sites) and everything appeared normal.
Connection to Mediafire was there, however I could not load any mediafire related pages!

As a final shot in the dark, I ran a partial system scan before I went to bed
and came up with two dozen Java related issues!
Mainly Java based trojan related problems (which are usually just isolated errors that accumulate and start to interfere with Java deployment)

Of course Mediafire is built around Java, their uploader is a Java based program.

I've got to run a full scan today to make sure theres nothing else.
Quarantined some files last night.
Checked my model files, and they're all okay.
(You don't have to worry about the PDFs either)

This morning Mediafire works perfectly.
So if it was related, I guess I fixed it?

UPLOADING ROMMEL'S ROD AS WE SPEAK...LINK SHOULD BE WORKING IN A FEW MINUTES!

sorry for the delay...I'm off to buy a Pie.
mmmm smells good

I've got a couple more in mind to design.

The Pie Wagon turned out real nice though!
A couple of small parts make it a "medium" build, but other than its pretty straightforward.

Man! You cranked that one out in record time! I've always liked the "C-cabs" also.
With regards to other customizers, there was a tv special about Big Daddy Roth a few months back. The show gave me the impression that he built cars strictly for the money and capitalized on everything he did - model kits, t-shirts, etc.

Dave,

Thank you very much for all of the work you have put into this series! I have built several of these so far and have given them to my son who thinks (as do I) that these models are some of the neatest things since sliced bread (well...........that may be a little strong).

It is a pity that being so generous with your time there are those that still ask for more.

My only request is that you keep it up.

Again, keep up the good work!

airdave
09-09-2010, 08:30 AM
Thanks guys...I do appreciate the support.

I don't mind the requests for extra stuff, as long as they're reasonable.
If you don't mind my bitching and smart ass comments, then I don't mind your requests! lol

yeah, I spend a lot of time on the Computer, as well as designing and building models.
You guys better hope I never get a real job!
Mostly out of a love for artwork, designing stuff, working on the computer and so on.

The models are mostly built for me first...and if I can get my ego stroked by giving them away, then all the better for me!

Only thing I ask, is that you don't share the models...I want people to visit my site. put up all the links you want, just send the people my way!
I want people to come see my stuff and see what else I do.

Maybe it will direct you to ecardmodels to buy one of my more serious model products.
Maybe it will send you to my Art site or my Airbrush Store.
To be honest, if I don't sell stuff at these other locations, I can't afford to make paper models. We all know what thats about.

At one point I thought I might add a "Donation" thingy to my free models page but then I rethunk it...we'll see how things keep going.

...........................................

I have had a couple of requests to "send" files, because people can't download easily from their locations.
Unfortunately I can't spend my day emailing these files
and some file are 2mb or larger which makes for a big email!

And so I came up with one idea.
I am now offering the entire (up to date) collection of Models,
which currently sits at 20 models delivered on one DVD.
I'll burn all the PDF files onto a hi-quality MiniDVD-ROM (1.4Gb)
and mail it directly to you by Parcel Post.

yes...theres a cost...to cover the effort, the materials and the shipping.
(Not the models, 'cause they are FREE to download)

More info on at the bottom of the KoolWheelz page...check it out (http://cutandfold.info/html/kool_wheelz.html)

I am having a download issue with the Pie Truck, it won't download, and when I right click on it, and do a save as, the downloaded file can't be opened by Acrobat.

yep sorry Rick, it works fine

did you right click the file name and try to save?

click the file name, and wait for the download window to appear.
wait for the download to become active and then click download.
choose to open or save the file (best to save it and open it when its on your PC).

another fun fact...
was doing some measuring yesterday, figuring out some scale issues
and although I am not designing or building the KoolWheelz to any particular scale
I have been trying to stay fairly consistent with size.

Trying to keep all the models at roughly the same scale
and from the measurements I took,
the average scale seems to be about 1/59 scale.

not quite 1/64 diecast scale, but close

Just thought some of you might be interested

if one person hits the link and downloads the file,
then the link works and the file is there.

I went and checked...
clicked the link on my site,
opened up the mediafire link,
waited for the active download,
clicked and saved the file,
downloaded and then opened the file.

not much else i can say
unless you have a problem at your end?
...maybe everyone is trying to download it all at once?
try again later when its not so busy

just wondered if anyone knows "daredevilbr"
he is a member over at Zealot.
not sure if hes a member here
he is present on many blogs and paper modeling sites across the web.

has his own blog too

He is posting my KoolWheelz models without permission.
Direct links to my models.
Even linked all my images off my site.

I have posted request asking him to remove the links and posts
but he has not responded.

Just wondered if anyone knows him?
maybe some of our Zealot members?

hey hey its the Monkees!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/Monkeemobileinhand.jpg

not quite what I had hoped for.
its got some good spots and some not so good spots.
the compound nose and hood was just too difficult to sort out
and the interior presented a huge problem.

I tried to design it without an interior, but because it has no windows,
side and rear are cutout openings,
the solid thing just didn't work.

but to install an interior made the model very complicated
and I did my best to simplify as much as possible and keep it to one page of parts.

the end result is a tricky build, connecting the body sides to the interior to the roof.
and when completed the door sides are too thin in my opinion.

the bright red finish doesn't allow anything for additional colour or shading...although the logo looks okay.

anyway...whats done is done...the Monkeemobile is finished.
I have to move on...because the cops are coming! I think I hear the Paddy Wagon?!!

the fake exhaust tips turned out okay and are a fun addition!

Nice job! I wasn't expecting an interior. I was visualizing solid black or something for the area under the canvas top - this is much nicer. Give it a try...I am just admitting its not my best design effort.

And as usual, I welcome any photos of your builds.

I've already built the models, so I know they do go together,
but if there are ever any serious builder issues, please let me know
and I will attempt to make changes to any of the models.

..........................

thanks go out to whomever contacted daredevilbr over at Zealot.
He just PMed me here, which I greatly appreciate.
(A response deserves some respect!)

Since the piracy and reposting issue comes up quite often here,
and just so theres an understanding of what happened,
heres his message to me and my response...

Hello Dave
Sorry about the delay in contact, but just today I learned of the incident.
Well, I posted on their models thailand forum I attend, I posted the original links and link to your site. Now if you see a problem with that, I will remove them.
Thx and sorry for the inconveniencAnd my reply to him:

I greatly appreciate your reply.
I did not know you were a member here or at zealot.
if I did, I would have tried to contact you here first.

I apologize for that.

You are welcome to put a link to my site.
But I do not want any one posting direct links to the downloads.
That is what you did.
You must remove the direct links to the downloads (the Mediafire links)

You also posted photos.
if you are using any image links, I would like them removed.

If you saved the images and then reposted them, that is okay with me

But you have given me no credit for the models.
...in fact you have added your own logo to all the images.

I would appreciate you making these corrections if you intend to leave the posted links.
Thanks again for the reply
Dave

just a follow up....

daredevilbr has made the effort to remove all the direct links to my models.
he has provided only links to my site

he has also changed all the "borrowed" images
so they don't include other logos or names.

I am extremely happy with the way he has responded and made an effort to be fair.

There is a small language barrier, but nothing we couldn't get past.
Nice to play fair with others isn't it?
And I didn't have to go uhu on him...isn't that nice too.

just push me...and I'll change the passwords!

......................................

oh, by the way,
I added a little more colouring and detail to the Monkeemobile body
before I packed up the final PDF!

and the link is up, the model is up, and I am down...for the night!

wow there are a lot of variations on this one!
Over the years, the Monogram Plastic Model has evolved a number of times.
Different colours ...blue, dark blue, even black!
Different colour interiors...red, gold.
Chrome or Gold finish metalwork... or both!

And so I ended up picking a few things from the different variations and coming up with this...

For all you "vintage" Drag racing and Show Car fans out there,
just like me...I'm sure many of you will appreciate this one!

The first and original Wheelstander!
(for those of you in the dark, thats a true drag racing vehicle that purposely does wheel stands and races, down the track, on two wheels!)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/redwagonvintagephoto.jpg

Bill Golden ("Maverick") and his "Little Red Wagon"
In 1965 Bill started the "wheelstander" phenomenon with his purpose built '65 Dodge A100 Pickup...powered by a Supercharged 426 Dodge Hemi engine.

One of my all time favorite Vintage Drag Racers!!
The Little Red Wagon changed quite a bit over the years and was immortalized in Plastic kits and diecast vehicles.
This version is not the first, but a very early version from 1965.

She looks good 'shopped into the vintage photo, doesn't she?
And heres a couple more shots of the model.
Still tweakin' the final model sheet...should be up soon.

Wow! That is so cool, Dave. I DO appreciate it - very much. You've moved away from the SD cartoony look for this classic. I'm really looking forward to building it. I'm working on your Pie Wagon right now. A simple and fun model.

airdave
09-26-2010, 06:50 AM
I'm really proud of this one.
It was a lot of fun to create and went together fairly easily
(considering a few smaller details)

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/LilRedWagon05600px.jpg

Yes, it is not very exaggerated, like the Snake and Mongoose cars
but it's still over-simplified for the purpose of easier building at this scale.

Although, I did have to modify the "engine" parts to make things a bit easier.
My first version just used the Blower and Scoop parts from my earlier Drag Car models.
I reduced those is scale and applied engine artwork to the truck bed.
Unfortunately everything sat way too low inside the truck box and the parts were too small to build.

In the end, I created this oversize engine which does add a bit of "cartoony" to the model, but makes things a lot simpler to build.
You can see it is still bigger than the designated area on the floor of the truck box!

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/LilRedWagon04600px.jpg

I've included a little "Show Sign" in the kit
which can also be used as a prop for posing the Truck in a "wheelstand".
(I just used a paper clip in the following picture)
The underside "chassis" parts also features some colouring and artwork.
Not enough to show off, but enough so that the exposed parts look better (when wheelstanding).
You can see some of that in the first "vintage photo" image I posted.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/LilRedWagon03600px.jpg

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/LilRedWagoninhand.jpg

Only problem I have now, as my models keep getting more complicated is keeping the models to scale.
(I seem to be getting away from the really simple early models)

I had to reduce the parts size of this model twice from my first version!

In the end, The Little Red Wagon came out on par with my Deora model.
Which is cool...because the Deora was built on a 1965 Dodge A100 (the very same vehicle!)

I was lucky enough to get the Lil Red Wagon before the download issue occurred. Unfortunatley my Canon printer is having problems with colors (although the color test seems to work fine) as well as not being able to completely align the printhead (bidirectional test). I don't think a deep cleaning will solve the problem, and I've reloaded the driver. I really wanted to build a few of these beauties for the convention. I'll have to get a neighbor to print some for me or go to Staples.

All Kool Wheelz Model Links (Downloads) are available again!

For now the files are being hosted at Megaupload.
That means the downloads are a little different.

Not quite as easy as they were before, but hopefully everyone will appreciate my position.

To download any file is fairly straightforward:
click the file link and you will be taken to a Download page.
You must enter a "captcha" phrase ...this is new...just copy a simple four letter phrase (to make sure you are a human downloader).
Then you can choose the option of "Regular Download"
...but you will have to wait 45 seconds for the DL to become available.
Once it is, just hit the DL button and the file transfer will begin!

Files are fairly small, so transfers are pretty quick.

(If you happen to own a Megaupload Premium account you can opt for the instant high speed download)

Why have I switched like this?
1. I am using Megaupload for some other Files so I want to keep things at one location.
2. Megaupload will reward me, over time, for the downloads. I get points which I can redeem for more premium File Hosting services.
3. The extra measures to get to a file help slow down some of the multiple downloads.
4. Regular downloaders are also restricted to how many quick downloads they can do in one day, once again helping to slow down the number of multiple downloaders.

if anyone has any trouble with the Megaupload downloads or access to the files, just let me know and I'll help out in any way I can.

Glenn

...never heard of it, never seen it.

Obviously I would have to see it (and fall in love with it) for it to get on the drawing board.
Otherwise, my collection is all about those cars I have known and loved from my childhood and my favorite customs through the years.

aaahhh very interesting.

quick search gave quick results

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u241/hobbybobby_photos/Depth%20Charger/027.jpg

what you saw, is this new re-release of an old AMT kit.

Originally released in 1972 (I don't remember it) it is considered a "Holy Grail" for collectors of AMT kits!
I have a feeling it was in limited numbers and not a big seller and that makes it very rare now.

Its whacky...its crazy...its what the old customs were all about!!

and yet...I don't like it.
Thats probably why I didn't pay any attention to it back in '72.
sorry
I'm not aware it was a real custom, probably just an AMT creation.

...and even if i did like it, its too complicated for a mini paper version (for me anyway).

Just in case anyone is wondering or concerned...
the Kool Wheelz Collection is not dead, not finished, not forgotten!

I stopped (halfway through the latest design!) to take care of other important projects.

With the recent BlueNose Mustang models,
two new Diorama Accessory Kits,
my GeeBee build,
the redesign of my C-130/AC-130,
the additon of another P-51 model (to coincide with the release of John Mollison's Prints),
and now...three more related aircraft (two P-47s and an A-36)

...I have not had the time to deal with the Kool Wheelz designs.

rest assured I still have many more in the works
and I'll probably get back at 'em in the New Year!

so, for all you KoolWheelz addicts, the best I can say is "be patient"!

shhh... I managed to get the spy-cam into the KoolWheelz workshop and snapped this pic of the next super secret project! enjoy!

KoolWheelz....

are stirring again in my design mind....
lol

I am on the hunt for Model Box art!

Specifically box tops and side panels (photos and/or scans)
to create miniature Model Boxes for certain Koolwheelz models.

Many of my designs are Cars that were Plastic Models at some point.
Deora, Paddy Wagon, S'cool Bus....

I thought it would make a cool display to add the miniature Model Boxes for those kits.

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t6/outlawzairbrushcom/hobby%20links/hot%20wheels/RommelsRodandBox.jpg

Low resolution Box top images are not hard to find.
Just do a search for (eg) "Rommel's Rod Box" and you get plenty of images.
What I need are slightly higher resolution images (clear, detailed, nice colour).
But Box tops are not enough...I need clear images of all four sides of the Boxes too!

So, I thought I would give a shout out to all Model builders and collectors out there who might have any of the models I need.
If you have one of the Boxes I need, maybe I can convince you to share some scans or photos of the box artwork.

Please don't start posting found images of box art here.
As I said, Google searches are easy enough,
and I have already found all the easy-to-find web stuff.

I am looking for web links to collections of complete Box art,
photo Galleries that contain specific Box art scans,
or those that might already have the boxes and are willing to share some images.

If and when I ever get to a Modelers show/Convention, I want to take a set of Plastic Model Miniatures (Models and Boxes)!

I was just watching an episode of Hogan's Heroes

obviously just a Prop Shop modified Sherman!

what I really enjoyed though, was Hofstedtter"s Staff Car,

I believe to be the real thing!

Hofstedter's Staff car was a Mercedes Benz G6. There are, (I believe) two left in the world, of the 6 or 8 originally built.
One remains in running order, as far as I know, and the other was/had been part of the now legendary Schlumpff Brothers' collection. That collection was broken up and sold several years ago, after the brothers had been found engaging in massive fraud to pay for assembling it.

One of the G6's used most often by Adolf Hitler had a small raised dais in the rear of the vehicle, set so he could take salutes and be seen by the crowd during parades.
Every so often, someone claims to have found that exact vehicle. Naturally, opinions differ.

Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

This discussion was started in my "Thunderbirds are Go" thread...
but should finish here!

Lady Penelope's FAB 1....
this and a Spectrum SPV have been in mind for a while.
The Tbirds builds prompted me to get it done!

Basic body design was straightforward enough...

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Thunderbirds/fab1koolwheelz.jpg

One of my goals was to get back to my early method of KoolWheelz design.
SIMPLE
The original intention was single sheet, over simplified shapes,
models that a beginner could handle, relying on graphics and artwork details.

I got away from that with a few of the KoolWheelz models (for good reason)
but I don't want it to progress any further.
So, its back to trying to "keep it simple"

The big hurdle with FAB 1 is the bubble canopy. Not an easy to thing to form in paper...for me....or the builder.
At first I thought "why not leave the canopy off...maybe just use the windshield?"
But this turned out to be incomplete looking (in my opinion)

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Thunderbirds/Fab1rear.jpg

So, with my standard approach to design...
- stare at it for hours
- pencil sketch a part design
- cut out little bits of paper and start gluing them together
- scan the part and tweak on the computer in 2D vector
- print and assemble many test copies....
- hope for the best

Funny thing is, my first design idea
(you can see it in the above pic, made from five little pieces of card)
turned out to be pretty darn close!

With some cleanup on the PC and then a few scissor trims...
I ended up with this:

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Thunderbirds/Fab1tweaker.jpg

Ignoring the really poor print job (not sure whats going on with my printer just lately)
this is about as good as it gets.
Its not perfect, and like a lot of my models, it relies on the builders imagination
to tweak it a bit and massage it into the best fit,
but I can live with it (especially at this scale!)

Final FAB 1 is just under 4 inches long.
Based on the 20' estimate for the real FAB 1, that makes it about 1/60 scale
which is exactly (sort of) the scale all of my KoolWheelz models!
So, I don't even have to resize this one!

I've got some cleanup to do...and create the model page...
so, watch for it real soon!

:)
This, and the SSV are fine companion pieces to the SPC. :)
I have a Chinese diecast of this SPV that was manufactured in the 1990's, I always regretted not getting the original Dinky Toy.

This is yet another Koolwheelz marvel I'll enjoy building.

Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

airdave
06-29-2011, 06:49 AM
I had the original Dinky 104 in 1968...probably my favorite Dinky because of its bulk and weight.
Before that. I alredy had FAB 1, Joe's Car, and the SPC.

I had them all again in the 80s...in fact I collected quite a few of each.
Many with origianl boxes.
I was stupid to sell them but I needed the cash for House payments,
and now they average about $500 a piece!

The Koolwheelz SPV is big...compared to other koolwheelz model.
Up to now, I haven't tried to stick to a specific scale or be consistent with scale
but because I already have the SPC at about 1/60 scale, it would be nice to
produce the SPV to match.

So...if I can keep all the parts on one page, I will leave it at this size.
If not, I may have to reduce it slightly.

Right now I have everything on one sheet, but I have no room for my diagrams or assembly details
and I am pushing the edge margins in a few spots.
(On my printer, my margins are set to only about .25", or no border if I choose...so its not an issue
but some folks still have very large margins and can't print things with this close to the edges!)

SPV is done!!

Looks good next to the SPC I already have in my collection!

Link and model isn't up yet...will be soon.
In the meantime, here is the last build I did.
(Minor alteration to a couple of parts, but basically this is the finished product)

Final model is 1/60 (based on Gerry Anderson specs for the SPV)
and comes in at barely over 4" long.

I guess I will have to do one of those too!

I also was never overly fond of the MSV: it looked far too much like a bunker on wheels, and seemed, for all its' Security naming, to be inadequate if ever it had to depart from a road, which made a logical mockery of the supposed security characteristics: hence my dislike of the vehicle itself.
However, it would certainly complete the vehicle set for Captain Scarlet, unless there were models of Captain Black, Captain White, or Captain Green's respective vehicles available, and those are not worth doing because each is only ever seen for two or three frames.
Which leaves the MSV as the logical choice.

Kind and Respectful Regards AirDave, Uyraell.

When I first heard about the new Green Hornet film, I got real excited.
I wasn't a fan of the old TV show, never really got the chance to watch it actually.

But being a fan of "superhero" movies, remakes of old TV shows and the like
and a fan of classic Custom Cars...
I couldn't wait to see the new "Black Beauty" on screen!

The movie turned out to be a bit of a letdown...but the car wasn't.

But when I started designing the Koolwheelz version of Black Beauty,
I couldn't remember the original Dean Jeffries design having so much chrome and sparkle.
In fact I remembered the car as being very plain and stealthy.
Sure it was "crime fighter" customized, but it was supposed to be just a shadow in the night.

Since I am a big Dean Jeffries fan anyway, I decided to switch my design
and follow the original TV car instead.
(if you don't know who Dean Jeffries is...he's the guy that designed and built most of the cars that George Barris takes credit for!)

So....I give you...
my miniature KoolWheelz version of the 1966 Chrysler Imperial based
Black Beauty by Dean Jeffries.

Veyron and other Supercars are already on the list in my mind,
and have been on my mind for a very long time.
I just haven't got serious enough yet to add them to the drawing board list.

I think its the fact that its a very curvy car...kinda like my favorite, the Porsche 911 and its kin.
A lot of my koolwheelz rely on stylized shapes and flat panels because of their size.
So I would hate to completely destroy the design of a car.

One day I will give the Veyron a try.

Oh wow! I forgot all about that Car!!
...and that FANTASTIC movie!

Why is it they don't make sequels to really GOOD movies?
Instead, we get Sex In The City 2!!

That car would take a lot of underdesigning to make it into a KoolWheelz miniature.
...maybe too much for me?!
I will definitely put it on the second string list though!

Did you know Nemo's Car was built...for real! an actual driving car.
But apparently the turning radius was so bad, it needed a entire City Block to turn around! lol

The Green Hornet vehicle has turned out exceptionally well, AirDave, and is another I shall add to my steadily growing collection of "must build" models. I particularly like the non-gloss finish, which certainly adds an authentic look to the car.
Congratulations on another very finely wrought design.

Nemo's Nautilus From "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" would be an exceptionally easy design.
This is because it is very plainly a fusion of elements from two submarine hulls which have very much in common.
Namely: the Type XXI Uboat and the USS Nautilus (Pennant Number 571) which is itself effectively an oversized Type XXI hull containing a nuclear powerplant to replace the intended Ingolin powerplant of the type XXI.

Watching "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", The design of Nemo's Nautilus as it appears there was easy to discern as having originated as I describe above.
The major differences being the shape of the conning tower and the "Viewing windows" in the hull, and which in the film become independent miniature submarines.
Naturally, for a kit, the minisubs would be redundant.

As a suggestion to anyone taking up such a design challenge, I'd recommend dropping the USS Nautilus hull and simply using a Type XXI hull as a basis, and slightly underscaling the conning tower and its' related fittings.
The resulting model would be, imho, completely acceptable.

Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

I know this is almost heretical, but I claim ignorance. I am totally in the dark about these vehicles and their TV shows. Having no background with these, and nothing that the SPC would go with, I never got it. Then you did the SPV and I thought that as a set I should get them. This third vehicle would pretty much seal the deal. They look very good together.

When I googled the shows and vehicles, and being warned not to expect much on the MPV, I did not expect it to look this good. The images I found on the net seemed like the proportions were totally off, and I wasn't impressed with the vehicle. I don't know if it is your redesign for being a KoolWheelz vehicle, or if it just looks a lot better next to the other two, but these are going to be high on my project list.

Thanks

If you didn't experience any Gerry Anderson in the 60s,
then it will be tough to get you interested at this point.
...its obviously one of those "you had to be there" experiences.

Many people know Thunderbirds, but less know the earlier shows and
the two shows that followed Thunderbirds: Captain Scarlet and UFO.

Its a very English thing, although the TV show Space 1999 (which I did not like)
helped expose North Americans to the wonders that Gerry Anderson and his wizards could bring us.

Historically, the shows must be recognized for their cutting edge special effects and miniatures work
and the model masters like Derek Meddings (who worked on James Bond films, Superman, Batman, etc)
and other members who went on to do special effects in 2001 and Star Wars.

Thunderbirds was of course Anderson's big TV hit...I grew up with the show in the very early 60s.
One of the problem elements of the show was the use of Puppets
with grossly oversized heads for the main characters.
Refinements in special effects and puppet quality led to a more realistic looking puppet that was used in the followup TV show Captain Scarlet.

I loved Captain Scarlet for its more realistic look
and a whole new set of fantastic vehicles like the models we are talking about (SPC, SPV and MSV)...
but also the Angel Interceptors and Cloudbase.
[Make sure you check out the Pilsworth models of both!]

No, the MSV is not my favorite vehicle either. Its pretty ugly in fact.
And I don't believe it was a main regularly featured vehicle like the SPV and SPC.
but I guess it had its purpose and place in the show...
and it was one of the Dinky Captain Scarlet toys produced in the 60s.
So thats why I had to include it my set...in honour of Dinky Toys which I loved so much!

AND...the MSV is posted and the link is up!!

*I own about 12 different copies of this film along with a number of collectible items.
I grabbed a theater used Poster in 1982 and I even have a VHS copy signed by Harrison Ford! No I don't like this movie much.

The only Deckard's car I've seen was not very reminiscent of the movie to put it kindly. I didn't want a spinner sitting by itself. I hope this is nearing the top of your list.

I screen captured the opening billboard from a video on the web. I can see a display in my head. Thanks for a great model. I love Karl's display of the Fifth Element.

Not much to say about this one...

its been a long time coming!
Started this design about 6 months ago? maybe more?
Its only because of a recent inquiry regarding the state of Drag-U-La
that I decided it needed to be finished!

So, it is.

For you Munsters fans...you can now get the set!

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/KoolWheelz/MunsterModels800px.jpg

But I warn you...this gets a "Hard" label...
because of many very small parts, some very small cuts and folds.
You'll need a magnifying glass to put this one together!

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/KoolWheelz/dragulainhand.jpg

Probably get the model page finished and uploaded by tomorrow.
Download Link shouldn't be too far behind.

Have fun.

yes, Red Baron has always been on my list.

I saw this car back in '67,
and I owned the original hot Wheels,
and I saw the rebuilt car again twice in the last decade,
and I met Chuck Miller back in '02

I got some classified information...some sneaky spywork...
that prompted me to rush into production
a totally new and unique Koolwheelz design.

kinda reminds me of a few years back, when a well known plastic model company

thats what you kids of today don't realize...
in past generations:
custom cars were built for real...models came later!
test pilots actually flew real X planes...no CGI simulators!
car chases and explosions in films were real...people actually got hurt!
mobile phones were connected to a large shoulder bag that carried a fifty pound battery!

sorry guys, but I have enough Koolwheelz models lined up at the moment.
I'm really not looking for more design ideas.
And as I have stated before, the designs are generally cars that have made an impact on me and my life...
I am inspired to add a design based on my own experience and interest in that vehicle.
And I'm not just out to create a collection of "Hot Wheels" models, or "Movie Cars".
You also have to keep in mind the scale I am trying to work with. Working with
small details and keeping the models restricted to one page is challenge enough!
Please let me deal with the list of Models I already have...then, when I run out of ideas, you can swamp me with suggestions!

Before there is any more speculation or I start a guessing battle...
heres the facts...

Principle filming is currently underway just down the street from me
(actually Pinewood Studios Toronto)
for the 2012 remake of "Total Recall"

yes, the same Total Recall!
Probably Arnold's best SciFi pic and one of my faves.
Although the new version is apparently more closely based on the original
Philip K Dick SciFi novel “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale"

Anyway, this past week, we got a glimpse of some outdoor filming
(behind the Metro Toronto Convention Centre)
that included these amazing "Hover" Police Cruisers.

but, I present the KoolWheelz Federal Police Hover Cuiser

IMPORTANT!

If you have already downloaded the Straker's Car model,
you might want to go get it again.

I just uploaded a replacement version.

When I was finishing a model, I settled on a final scale size
as the last step in the process...before I created the PDF file.

But I guess I forgot to save this file, and it had reverted to an older, smaller version
of the model...and then I made the PDF without realizing.

The uploaded model is too small...its more like 1/70 scale.
I would prefer the models be a little more in tune, and closer to 1/60 is more agreeable.

So, I have upsized the kit and reuploaded a new PDF.

if you have the model entitled "Koolwheelz STRAKER" - you have the old one!
You need the newer model, named "Koolwheelz STRAKERS CAR"

OKEY DOKEY?

Dave,

There's a link in the paper guns thread in the design projects topic (one level up from here) that takes you to a forum or blog where they have 1:1 guns and helmets including the WW2 stahlhelm. Seemed to me the Red Baron helmet wasn't really a pickelhaube but a 'coal scuttle' with a spike. Might save you some time in the design. Thanks for the great models you've designed, I particularly liked the pink Rolls Royce!

............

Obviously other projects have kept me busy and away from any new Kool Wheelz release...
but that doesn't mean there hasn't been any work!

First of all, theres the Moon Mixer!

This is an old Plastic Model Custom Car, by Monogram (1970s)

Not a Model that I chose...this kit was suggested by John Leslie (Lower Hudson Valley Paper Model Shop)
after I offered to produce a special Kool Wheelz edition
to help celebrate the 1,000,00th visitor to the Lower Hudson Valley PaperModel Shop (http://jleslie48.com/index.html).

Since John's site is known for the Space related models, we tried to stay within that theme.

The Moon Mixer will also include a specially designed reproduction miniature Moon Mixer Model Box with 1,000,000 visitor artwork.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/KoolWheelz/MoonMixerproto1.jpg

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/KoolWheelz/MoonMixerproto2.jpg

At only about 3" long, its not the easiest build...
there are a few small parts, but its all presented in the usual Kool Wheelz package and will be a free download.

However, it will only be available at Lower Hudson Valley
(at least for the first Month)
and thats also where you will be able to get the limited editon Model Box!

Can't tell you how soon it will be released, you will just have to watch John's site!

..............................

I'm working on a special Christmas release...no promises yet, its turning out to be a little more complicated than I had originally planned.

Its not my normal Kool Wheelz venture...in fact, it doesn't fit at all! lol
Its not a "custom car"...its not even a car!

but its an interesting model that I have been thinking about for sometime
and it might be really cool in miniature Kool Wheelz format!
And i think it will be a cool idea for an Xmas giveaway!

...............................

Other Kool Wheelz models in the works?
Yes! Many!

but these (below) are actually in the design phase
and I have been working on the artwork:

Blade Runner Deckards Ground Police Car.
(also considering a fully marked Police version)

Chuck Miller's Fire Wagon

The StageCoach

LeMans Porsche 917

.................

Thats all I can give away at the moment.
Stay tuned!

With Webdude in apparent retirement, and you having branched into the "Cars" theme with SnotRod, Dave, have you been tempted by any of Cars 2 characters?

I haven't seen the film yet, but oh do I want these or what?

Johnny.

not really "branching into" CARS models.
(and to be honest, don't want to get too heavily involved in Disney stuff.
Last thing I need is to get their attention and have them force me to stop sharing these models.
Disney is very protective of their property and can be extremely aggresive in that respect.
One or two models might be okay, but if I started creating a whole series...they might start looking past the whole fan-art aspect of it.)

Snot Rod and Ramone were very early models in my KoolWheelz collection.
The only two vehicles I was interested in doing at that time.

Snot Rod because its a Drag Car
and Ramone because I am a Custom Painter and I love me a nice '59 Impala!

Fillmore appeared because of a need to create another VW Van model (for a Fathers Day gift).

I'll be honest, Hudson Hornet and The King are probably the only other two character cars I am interested in
...but they would be near the bottom of my to-do list.

I also have not seen the second film yet
...but unless theres something really special for me, I can't see being interested in any more of the CARS vehicles.

JohnM
08-31-2011, 04:34 PM
Okey Dokey. Understood. Especially the Disney angle.

For me the Doc stole the show, but I supose that's because I used to have one. Actually mine was a Commodore not a Hornet. Same difference but a bit posher, and not so "hot", but what a cruiser that was though. Spent a lotta time on that huge back seat.

Strange that the humble Caddy never got a character part?

Can't tempt you with a proper Mehari then? No-one makes models of them.
Probably because few people have ever seen one.

Johnny.

PS: Just googled Mehari ... Ebay is stacked.

Cool ! Cheers Rick. I've also just ordered a Michelin Promo one off Ebay,
but I can quite see this one developing some eyes in it's windscreen.

I'm actually a big car man at heart (currently a v8 Range Rover and a Mk2 Jag) with an uncontrollable love of the Goddess (Citroen DS), but some years back out on a job, this forlorn little Mehari peeped out at me from under a tarp. It's owner said he was thinking of cutting it in half to use as a trailer !!! ... Just couldn't let that happen, so £50 changed hands and he fork lifted it onto my truck. Fortunately I was travelling back empty.

Some ten years later, I often get a clip round the ear if she catches me looking at them on EBay. Ok, they're ugly ... All 2CV and derivatives are, but a Mehari is just so cute with it, and they are real fun to drive ... so long as it ain't raining.

Johnny.
