Royal Dutch Air Force Patriot System
Hi all,
Yes, the Racing Truck Nut is building something Military, again. This time it is the Patriot Launch System that was released a couple of months ago by the Royal Dutch Air Force. There are 3 vehicles to the system, Fire Control, Launch Station, and the Radar Unit. Rough estimate of the scale is 1:48/1:50, and the prints are on Euro C size, and Tabloid size. Lucky for me, I have sitting in my cubicle(yes I have a big cube) an HP DesignJet 5500 printer with a 36 inch roll. To make sure that the prints are printed correctly, I created a page to hold the print with no chance for the print to be cut or moved, so my sheet size was 20x28 inches, which in turn centered the print with enough margin, to print the models correctly. I did print on a heavier weight paper which I had laying unused for some years. Exact weight I have long forgotten, but it was the heaviest available at the time. Tonight I started with a cut up, just to be able to manage the parts and make piles for the major parts of the trucks. The first model I am doing is the Fire Control unit, a 6x6 single truck. I will building all 3 parts, and documenting any resulting progress. Enjoy Rick

So . . . instead of building orange or yellow off-road trucks you will be building green off-road trucks.
Seriously though - I look forward to seeing how they look |

Well I have returned to the build, I was working on some items around the house, so that is why the delay.
Wheels have been always given me troubles, so I made them all, 7 of them, 6 drive wheels and a spare. I would have liked the tread parts have more teeth, it makes for a smoother glue surface, and it doesn't cause the treads to flop or droop into the wheel sides. So right now, in the words of the car restoration shows, we have a "rolling chassis" I finished up the box chassis, and glued the wheels onto it More to come as always

I have been working on the cabin of the truck, and while gluing up the part, I noticed that there was a gap between the flap that folds in and sits on the chassis and the front of the cab.
I needed to use a filler to bridge that gap, and last week, I bought a couple of bags of craft sticks(popsicle, tongue depressors and stir sticks) the stir stick was just the right thickness to fill the gap. So I went and cut the stick into 1 inch lengths and then with some wood glue, attached those pieces to themselves. once the glue was dry, I spread glue on one side of the "mat" and slid it into the cab and pressed it down to make full contact with the paper. after that I ran a bead of glue where the flap would attach, and then pressed that tab into the glue, and now I have a complete cab, ready to be fitted and glued to the chassis. More to come as warranted Rick
