Is that drawing for real? Looks more like a WH40K Ork vehicle....the size disparity between the car and the cannon certainly gives that impression. Wonder how many rounds could be accurately fired before the suspension and tires had to be replaced?

Congratulation Matt!
Your model is absolutely astonishing! I'm looking for your Spa 9000 (finalmente qualcuno si decide a farlo!). |

My apologies Matt. I thought you were kidding us. Still wonder about the beefed-up suspension and what must have been heavy-duty tires.

The Spa 9000 was a pretty good solution to the WW1 problem of making medium and heavy artillery pieces mobile. In WW1 once the fighting became static the standard light field artillery pieces became fairly ineffective so there was a general move to heavier artillery pieces. The problem was that with the standard horse towing there were severe constraints of both weight and speed.
The French Army had a number of mechanised solutions including the Renault FB portee vehicle, Schneider CD and the Saint-Chamond two vehicle SPGs. The Italian solution was to use surplus 102mm pedestal mounted destroyer guns fitted to trucks. With the addition of recoil arms and base plates this gave a fairly stable firing platform without damaging the truck. All of the equipment for a battery of guns was carried on other trucks. Apparently the operating procedure was to survey and prepare a firing line and move a whole battery overnight. The gun trucks were limited to fairly good ground close to roads but this wasn't much of a limitation in the very limited (in extent) battlefields in the Italian theatre. Regards, Charlie |
