Modelik Mark IV Male

Thus begins this build resulting from my recent poll. I hope I can get this built decently. I have seen a few threads starting this one on a couple forums, indicating rough seas ahead.

First up is the formers. There are a crap ton. I've separated out the center section ones from the sponsor formers.

I got them cut out and assembled, but not without issue. I had to trim some tabs off to get things to fit. I also had to sand a few bevels here and there, but they were marked as such on the formers themselves.

That's a big pile of formers!

A great day for Eu Tong Sen, but a sad day for Rita Hayworth

Let us all pause for a moment of silence to commemorate the sacrifice made by Greg’s hobby knife blades.

Everything looks good so far - straight and true and at right angles as required.

Looking forward to this build.

The formers need a lot of sanding to clean off the ends of tabs. The outer skin of the model is glued directly to the former and any tab end that sticks out turns into an unsightly bulge.

How are you going to handle the rivets?

It's models like these that make one think that a laser cutter might be a good idea.

The subject of this model Mark IV #2341 F56 Fly Catcher/Fantan had a varied history - seems to have survived WW1.

landships - 2300 - 2400

Honourable mention only on former count - the winner is probably Orlik's K-Wagen model - masses of 2mm formers.

Regards,

Charlie

Skimming through the images reminded me of a trick I've used when faced with trying to get tab ends sanded flat to formers. Put a little Sanding Sealer on the tab end - when it dries the card is much easier to sand flat.

For those who've not used Sanding Sealer - it's used in woodworking to seal or fill up the pores of soft wood so that the wood can be sanded to a fine finish.
Soft woods like Pine are difficult to sand to a fine finish because the sandpaper catches on the porosity of the wood and rips up the surface.

Thank you for the suggestions and all your input Charlie.

I do appreciate it.

As for rivets....I'm not sure how or if I will deal with them at this point.

Holy Cow, Greg. This will be one to watch. I've always liked the WWI tanks!

Finished cutting formers and glued the sponson parts together. A few needed trimmed, either because they were too long or they were not tabbed correctly.

They will have to be sanded a bit before skinning.

This is quite a sizable model.

That's a lot of formers. Callous producing cutting for sure. But a gallant start!
