YouTube build channels

Hey all,

I've been looking for build/tutorial/how-to channels on youtube, and havent had much luck.

Most of the stuff I find are videos set to music showing completed models.

I'm looking for step by step build how-tos on how not to screw up an expensive paper model, i.e. how to form hulls, and sand seams, shape wings, etc.

I've built plastic my whole life and I'm new to this paper game, and I want to do it right.

Thanks,

Cheers, Ian

I have not seen any videos like what you are looking for, but we do have a whole sub forum dedicated to beginners and how to get started, called First Cuts: A Lounge.

You can ask any question on how to build certain parts and the like.

I would suggest you download a model from our Download section, print it out, and start, if you need help, there will be people able to help you

Like Rick said, there's not a lot of video stuff available, as far as I know...

Most people around here learn from build threads on forums like this, watching other people build step by step, asking for tips and techniques along the way.

That's how I learnt most of what I know, there's no shortage of talented, helpful people around here who would be more than willing to help out and some of them have been extremely helpful over the years. I'm always learning new stuff from following other people's builds.

Start small, start with free downloadable models until your confidence and skills improve. I recently completed my first expensive commercial kit. Something I never dreamed of being able to do when I first discovered this hobby.

Video production is a big effort...I'd love to know more about how some people get it done.
I think many pay others to edit and produce their videos, since they monetize their channels.

But attempting to document an entire build would be a task even bigger than the build itself!
I know that from doing my own Build Threads.
I take hundreds of photos that require sorting and editing.

And unless its the exact model you are building, it may not have the info you require.

I guess a similar type of model might be helpful, but the other issue is personal technique.
No matter what you see and hear, you will still have to establish your own technique.
And that comes from time and experience.

Start with a simple kit...and work your way up to a better/harder kit.
Search the forum for Build Threads related to your interests.
Start here: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/ships-watercraft/

Its too bad "build threads" weren't sorted into one group.
Idiots (like me) went and posted their build threads in their own channel, and not in the "Builds" section!
Maybe someone can make a list of all build threads?
That would be cool.
Has anyone got 20 years they aren't busy? lol

First, welcome to paper modelers.

It looks as if you are interested in ships, so you may want to click onto the forum and look for model builds then the "ships" link. This section then lists all the ships that are being built and those that have been completed. One tip look for the threads with the most posts, these will generally be "how I built my model" and will have loads of pictures - think "you tube frame by frame". You may strike it lucky and find just the model you want to make.

There's also a section for Hints and Tips.

If you've been making plastic kits for a while, you will be used to working out solutions to problems - It's the same with paper models, so you are already part way there;-)

One more tip, if you decide to download a kit - make sure there are adequate instructions - have a look at "Creative Park". They have a wide choice of models and the instructions are very good.

Finally, unlike plastic, with downloaded kits - if you make a mistake, you can always print off the parts again.

Good luck

Mike

Thanks for the info folks.

I will look into all your advice after I m done my house move. Lol.

I like the big scale ships, all kinds of subjects you can t get in Plastic and about 1/3rd of the price

The new Trumpeter 1/200 im Titanic retails for about $430 while a Maly Modelarz 1/200 Titanic retails for about $10.

No brainer really.

Thanks all,

Cheers, Ian

My little channel may be useful. Look under videos and look for a Marek 109 build. Warts and all. Maybe it could give you some ideas? Here is a link to one of the parts I posted. They are not academy award stuff...just be warned!

Glad it helped a bit! It's no Titanic, but the techniques are still similar. I am working on a WWI dreadnought and just finished a cool 1/100th submarine and built my mom a Civil War iron clad so I can be a nautical nerd too!

By the way, I am sure no expert but there are lots of amazing modelers here and they are free with help and suggestions. A very nice group...
