Best F-4J Phantom
What is the BEST F-4J Phantom paper/card kit available? I have a near 20 year old Halinski. I had always thought it would be an excellent kit...its 14 pages!!! Well it looks like it may be a little ruff. I was looking in my kits trying to pick my next build and wanted to see the Halinski Phantom F-4J finished. Saul H. Jacobs M.Ed. has a card model site and posted this photo. BUMMER! Dont get me the least bit wrong he is an artist the build is beautiful. The kit looks to have a lot of dimention and part shape errors. 2nd photo is from my days of VMFA 235 service.

The only Navy version of the Phantom that I've seen in paper is Halinski's. Halinski did a remake of the earlier J kit that you are referring to, and I would expect it to be excellent. However, it is rare as hen's teeth. Good luck finding it - I would like to find a copy myself.
In the end, your best bet may be to repaint a GPM and redesign the nose - Jeanma is the resident expert in these kits, and his builds show them to be very detailed and very nice. Ken

Pmodel.net has an F-4EJ in JDF colors. It is not as detailed as the aforementioned brands and may not have a cockpit, but still builds up nice.

If you have been to the old Sol Jacobs site you will notice different
degrees in quality of his builds. Like all of us it's a matter of maturing between early and later builds. A lot of the models were not edge colored. I got my inspiration from his site to build the Hobby Model SU-35 and it turned out pretty good in my opinion. Sol was an inspiration to many of us and I used to buy canopy and wheel sets from him. Heck of a guy that promoted card modeling back then. I too would like to find the Halinsky F4J kit that he built in your first photo but as Ken says they are as rare as hens teeth. |

It looks like the best would be to take the GPM and redo the nose. Redo wing where landing gear bay bulges upper wing surface, and tires and wheels differ. In doing the repaint several lines would have to change such as the different fuel probe location. The Halinski has to many flaws in shapes of parts and profiles. I would not spend much money on one except to collect, not a build. A project like that would kill my enthusiasm. 727 Piedmont is still on hold while I finish the P-51B in Aluminum and I want to do a stright forward paper/card build of something with accuracy and detail like the Do17 or F4U-1D. Unless some one takes up the challange and produces an improved F-4J , blank or navy or Marine, I will keep building from the kits I have.
