FG Huey Gunship
Morning Folks,
I just thought I'd throw out a quick and dirty build thread of the Fiddlersgreen Huey Gunship version, including details on the weapons package, which I understand some people can't figure out. I'm not going to give impressions or a review of the model, being as it's my design, and I'm kinda biased. First off, this version is as yet unavailable (I just finished the repaint), but the weapons package is. Okay, on to the build: I would recommend that you start from the front, and work your way back, because you really have to work the first two pieces with your fingers to get them to line up, (Done intentionally, to get the shape of the nose more accurate). Here's the nose made up. Now the finished helicopter. I got caught up in building, and by the time I thought of taking pics, it was done. Oops. On to the weapons: These parts need to be laminated for strength. Heres everything cut out. Sure is a big pile o' parts. The weapons supports are now glued together and mounted. A whole lotta tiny tubes later, and the rockets are done. Now for the Miniguns. Notice the little electric motor on the sides. Everything's mounted now. For the ammo belt, just fold in half, glue, then route it and trim to length. The finished bird, now with teeth. |

Nice model. Brings back memories of these fellows flying overhead in support of us in the Delta in 1966-67.

that sounds scary to me, Don! Aaron, your Huey is an excellent model, and this makes it better yet. You have a couple nice helicopters, the Sikorskys are cool, too. I want to thank you for your help on my early designs, too.

Murphy, I love the feed to the mini-guns...VERY Nice!!!. Looks real. Ya even have the tail stinger on there and the wsp's. Nice touch.
Now, not criticism just hoping to give you an idea. It looks like there is some excessive droop in the blades, did you think of reinforcing them with wire? Huey blades really hold up well, the Blackhawk droops bigtime but it's designed that way. FYI- the main hub has a 3 degree pre-cone that further raises the blades at flat pitch. Thanks Rick!
Hey, my father rode hanging out the door of these ships in 'Nam. I've always wanted to do one, but the big plastic ones are too expensive. I'd much rather do this version...

I was with the 1st Cav. and the first thing they did to some of the hueys was remove the doors, slide a strip of APC across the deck, cut a rocket pod in half and mount on the end of the APC and fill the pods with hand granades. Weird. I was an Aircraft Armament tech for the huey armament. Wound up in a company with only Schnooks, no armament, and working in production control. Go figure???:D
My Brother was a huey jockey... Other brother was there also as an MP. Thankfully we all made it out without a scratch. |
