He's just cruising along like he does this every day. "Missing tail fin? What missing tail fin?"

Yeah, the tails of the buffs were kinda weak... especially back in the early days when they had the taller tails... they shortened the vertical fin in the later models to reduce this sort of stress.

There was a B-52 that lost its entire tail over Cumberland, Maryland, in 1964 and subsequently crashed. Only the pilot and co-pilot survived. It was in severe turbulence and was trying to climb above it when the ENTIRE tail of the aircraft simply snapped off, somewhere aft of the rear main gear. It had two nuclear weapons aboard.

later! OL JR

Hope they gave medals to the entire flight crew that day. They certainly earned it! Just shows that cool heads and great flying skill can save the day in dire circumstances.

Great skill indeed, the BUFF's aren't the easiest of aircraft to fly when all is going well, so with that in mind and add the missing tail into the mix... this crew earned their money that day !

That was an H model BUFF which did have the short tail. The good thing about the flight was the information gathered went a long way in improving the structure of the B-52.

Since the aircraft couldn't make turns...just fly straight ahead for the most part, it was vectored to Blytheville AFB, Arkansas, as it was almost a direct approach on the heading the aircraft was flying.

There was just enough of the vertical stabilizer to maintain lateral control of the aircraft. But it still amazes me. But not as much as the F-15 which lost a wing and was landed safely.

Another with bits missing

Seems they build American planes to fly with bits missing.

One pic shows the aircraft coming in to land, the other how it happened.

The P51 dived into the ground but the pilot bailed out and landed safely.
