Smile Canopy on

Once canopy is dry from the Future dip, I trimmed it by dry fitting to the fuselage.
Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7815.jpg

Then glue the windshield frame only to the canopy. Then dry fit again and trim as needed.

Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7819.jpgFocke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7820.jpg

I then glued the canopy windshield side only to get the best fit. This is tricky since there is no perfect attachment so needed to glue in stages and trim.

Then attached the rear canopy frame and fairing to match.

That is all here

Smile Aircraft done- status pics

The aircraft is done now. Only missing items are the externals. 4 X-4 missiles and a drop tank. Those will come later.

For now here are a few pictures of the completed aircraft.

Isaac san,
You mastered how to build crystal clear canopy that is one of keys to successful air craft build.
I think Japan is cold lately. Take care not to catch a cold.
These three days Hanoi returns to summer. Everyday temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius so I got sunburned today after went for bicycle riding for several hours.
I look forward to missles and a drop tank
Yu

Excellent work, Isaac! That is a beautiful aircraft.
I would like to echo what others have said about the canopy. It looks great!

I sort of envy you now. It is getting cold now in Tokyo, but not freezing yet. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day hear.

My canopies are getting better, but it is a long process. It is always better to purchase them if available.

Regards

Isaac

Cool Ruhrstahl / Kramer X-4 missiles

The accessories that make this model look much better are the 4 external X-4 missiles.

These were wire guided contraptions and I really don't think you could really hit anything in flight. Those were better for slow moving ground targets ( like the TOW missiles for helicopters, or anti tank missiles like the Sagger ).
( the X-4 wires were housed in spools on the fin tips, 2 per missiles )

Kit missiles
The kit provides you with 4 of them. I built one, but did not really like it too much. It is OK, but not great.

Missile body

I decided that the missile body will be made of wood. So I turned a wood dowel on my mini lathe. I printed a side view of this missile in 1/33 scale and laminated on a cardboard to be used as a template. Once the shape is ready and sanded smooth, I painted it on the lathe and then removed.

Nose tip
I discarded the kit part and made one out of tooth pick.
Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7862.jpg

Fins

I decided to use the kit fins ( forward and aft ). Those are OK. For supports, I drilled 4 locating holes in the body and inserted soft wires.
Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7857.jpgFocke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7864.jpgFocke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7865.jpgFocke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7867.jpg

Fins on
Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7869.jpgFocke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7870.jpg

Rear fins and control spool holders.

The fins from the kit were used.
However, I discarded the spools housing on the fin tips ( there are two per missile ) and made them from tooth picks.

Missiles are done and ready.
Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7877.jpgFocke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest-dscf7878.jpg

It is allot more work, however, I really hate making external ordnance exclusively out of paper. I just can't do a good job as others can, so I use mixed media such as wood or plastic.

Cheers

Cool Missiles loaded

The X-4 missiles are complete. I positioned them on the pylons by drilling and inserting a soft wire to hold in place while gluing.

Belly tank is next and last item.

Cheers

Excellent work on the X-4 missiles, Isaac! It really makes it easier when you use a lathe to form the missile's body. They really do make the aircraft look ready for an interception mission.
