Grumman US-2N 'Tracker'

With pride and pleasure I herewith anounce the arrival of a new-born descendent to 'my never flying paper family', the Grumman US-2N 'Tracker'

With the opening of this thread I take the opportunity to ask my English speaking friends over here whether they can tell me the appropriate name of the cardboard material that I used on this model but isn't actually real cardboard.
In Dutch it is called 'houtbord' (translated to the letter 'woodboard') and in German (in their modelling site I've found the stuff) 'Finnholz' (wood from Finland).
Like to hear from you.
Greetz from Diemen, Holland

You can't literally translate every word. Cardboard means in Dutch ordinary "karton".

Thanks, Gerard. Got to consult my old schooltime math teacher for some help with the language! Cheers.

I know that 'karton'(160gsm) is called 'cardboard', but how do you call the material that (as I said) has in German and in Dutch as well an other name than 'karton' ?

Hallo Gerard,

Thank you for your fine models!

I am afraid I can't say for sure what 'houtbord' might be in English, but when I was younger, my father used to say that if, when you folded it, it creased, it was 'cardboard', whereas if it cracked, it was 'hardboard'.

'Hardboard' translates (via Google) to 'Hartfaserplatte' in German, but only translates into 'hardboard' in Dutch, I am afraid. 'Hartfaserplatte' also keeps translating to 'Hardboard' in Dutch, which might be a problem with my browser cookies.

translation.babylon.com translates 'Hartfaserplatte' to 'karton', and 'hardboard' to 'zn. hardboard (hout vezelplaat)'. From my time in Brussels, I remember that 'voedingsvezels' are 'dietary fibre', so 'fibreboard' might also be close.

Groetjes

Mike

This is interesting. I know the Dutch words "karton", "Bristol karton" and "golfkarton", which are all made of paper of various sorts. There is also very thin wood sheets, called "fineer", which is veneer in English, but what is the dutch word "houtbord"? I never heard of it. In art circles and architectural maquette building they use "foamboard", a very light and stiff board as construction material, but that is probably not what you mean, Gerard. So please what is houtbord for a sort material? And how do you use it?

Hallo Gerard,
First of all many thanks for your wonderful models.
Last week I visisted the "Military Aviation Museum" at Soesterberg. I think many of you designs find their inspiration there, right? Are you considering to do some also in the Dutch military colors?
And personally I hope for the F86 SuperSabre ( the one outside on the pole ).

As for the "houtbord" : (Geen idee) No idea...
For me it's :
Paper: everything from 80 - ??? as long as it shows no fibres. Dutch = papier
Cardboard : everything from over 0,5 mm and showing fibres, greyboard or karton.
I think you talk about greyboard, karton.

Ik ben nederlands en ken het woord houtboard niet...

Greetings,
PT

There is a product called chipboard which is sort of a very dense paper that is used as a backer for pads of paper and in book binding. It is usually soft, like pressing together paper pulp to make it denser and thicker.

There is another product called hardboard which is made from wood particles that are pressed together under great pressure to form sheets. Masonite is another name. Hardboard can be used for wall panels, is used to make clipboards, and drilled with many holes to make pegboard, among other applications. It is very hard.

Maybe one of those is what you used.
