Opposing engines on twin-engined aircraft are helpful when the aircraft ends up in a single engine situation - IF the descending blade when viewed from behind the cockpit looking forwards is on the inside of the engine towards the fuselage. It helps with the propeller's angle of attack and the amount of outward pull and distance from the center of gravity.
In most modern light twins both engines turn the same direction (in the US, clockwise when looking towards the front of the aircraft from the cockpit) and the left engine is considered "critical." If the left engine fails, the right engine requires a significantly higher amount of rudder input to keep the airplane in stable flight but that also means more drag. That means the aircraft's single engine performance and survivability is much higher with a working left engine. Obviously the ideal is engines opposing each other with both engines turning the propeller from the outboard over the center of the engine and downwards toward the fuselage, but that requires a manufacturer to make two sets of parts for two engines that generally aren't completely interchangeable. ~now to take the flight instructor hat back off.

I always thought that's M-485 blue gray used normally by USNavy planes. Of course it faxed a lot in Mediterranean sun plus was beaten by sand on African airfields etc. Lots of variations but I think it always started with M-485.

Bruno, I don't know if you have access to Federal Standard 595a color chips, but according to Dana Bell's Air Force Colors Vol.2-ETO & MTO 1942-45, Sky Base Blue was 'slightly darker' than 15123 and Flight Blue was a 'close match' to 35190.
In the text he also states that P-38's in this scheme were often overpainted at British depots a single color: British PRU Blue. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks,
I'll check this evening if this can indeed work. Other colors I found were too bright or too green. I also read that PRU blue was used on the Photo Recon Lightning but only later in the war.

Checked it out and I'm pleased with the colors.
I admit that I did not do a real haze scheme, which is a bit too difficult in Word.

I was working on that one already, but the sources contradict the color schemes.
Some show haze blue like bottom and brownish top, others say it was blue on top, again others show grey bottom sides. for the moment I started with a blue-brown scheme. B
