Prop - straight from the kit, but carefully shaped
Jeff, nice to meet you; first time I believe?
Ostoja, I believe the scale speed to make a paper model fly would require for it to be a high-speed jet – the wingloading of a scale paper model just is too high (which I'm sure you know); nice thought though! For a true flying paper model, see e.g. the Quetzalcoatl high-performance all-paper glider. And it probably has the scale speed of a jet. Billy, always a pleasure; nice of you to stop by! Michael, spot on, I am secretely hoping for the Po-2 to be able to taxi under its own power! Prop - straight from the kit, but carefully shaped The propeller was built up just according to the kit specifications, nothing fancy. The result proved quite satisfactory: Above: Here the prop is shown mounted to the electric motor assembly (not glued yet of course). So far, so good. If you build the Po-2, take really good care to sand the inside, laminated prop part to section, and preshape the blades really carefully. That way, I didn't even have to use the filler skin strip provided in the kit, which helped a lot towards an acceptable result. Over the years, I have toyed with the idea of making a proper built up propeller according to Po-2 specifications (a lot of work, if you continue reading that thread…). A better idea, I now think, would have been to modify the simplified laminated prop already available in the downloads section. That really works, for the WWI prop type modeled there. However, the kit version for the Po-2 turned out so well that I left such a redesign for the future. |

Kind of relevant to this build
Nadezhda Popova, who has died aged 91, was a member of an elite corps of Soviet women — known as the “Night Witches” — who fought as bomber pilots in the air war against Germany, and the only one to win three Orders of the Patriotic War for bravery. Fascinating build. I especially admire your work in getting the printed colors correct. This is something that has always eluded me. I'm also impressed with the fact that you were successfully able to remove the motor from the toothbrush. I've tried but my particular toothbrush was completely molded around the motor and after a long time grinding, I gave up.
