H0 is a very popular scale now. I'm collecting (and sometimes building :-D) armoured vehicles and some military planes in this scale, too ...

1/87 scale Druine Turbulent - six versions

Here's a little aircraft that should answer to all of Jan Kytop's criteria - it is civilian, it is open cockpit (thus no problem with glazing), and it is small, very small. With kind permission from the designer, Krzysiek of Mikromodele (Krzychu74 on this site), here is the classic home-built Druine D.31 Turbulent upscaled (sic!) from the original 1/100 to 1/87 scale.

Even if it's small, Krzysztof himself has demonstrated that a 1/100 scale build is quite doable, so in the slightly larger scale of 1/87 it should be even more so. Here's a sample of the instructions and Krzysztof's original Swiss HB-JBC:

In addition to this Turbulent, I have made five repaints of the original. They represent all the colorful Turbulents flewn by the British Tiger Club. Repaints include the Tiger Club logo on the fuselages - although you may not be able to see it quite properly unless studing the model on the screen. Here's a representative sample of the five repainted Tiger Club Turbulents:

The last blue Turbulent model, G-ARNZ, includes a pair of skis, since that one is also used by the Club for winter flying. Those who have the Fiddlers green free download of the Piper J3 Cub will recognize where the idea for the skis came from...:

One modeling advantage of the Tiger Club Turbulents is that none of them have that difficult-to-build bulb sticking up from the top of the cowling. In older vintages of the Turbulent that was called for to house the top of the Volkswagen engine carburettor. Apparently they now have redesigned the cowling and perhaps mounted the engine slighly lower.

When you take a look at the downloaded kit, be sure to check out the nice link features included - click on photos, logos, and every place marked "Source", to get to the particular model you want to study in this 16-page kit, or to appropriate outside sources. If you follow the link to the Tiger Club, you will find tons of photos of the five Turbulents they use.

The 16-page the kit is made to fit 5x7 in. photo paper, larger picture postcard size. Or, you can print on either A4 or Letter size paper (two kit pages per printed sheet, still leaving ample margins). Each of the six models only require two kit pages (one sheet of ordinary paper) to be printed on photo paper, 170-200g/m2.

Get it from the downloads section.

Leif

Leif!

You snuck one in the downloads section without announcing it. And what a nice model it is! The Druine D.31 Turbulent in six different versions. Very nice model and a very nice interactive pdf presentation.

Very colorful repaints. Put them all together and you will have a regular flying circus.
Thank you for the effort.

1/87 scale GAL.42 Cygnet II - two civilian & one WWII versions

The Cygnet II is a most interesting aircraft. Designed in 1936, it is much like the more well-known Ercoupe, and had the same good reputation for being almost fool-proof. It is also the very first British all-metal stressed-skin light aircraft. Sadly enough, only ten were ever built, until the war put a stop to further production. The General Aircraft Ltd. thereafter got other tasks, building general aircraft parts, and eventually, amongst others, troop-carrying gliders for the invasion of Europe.

Five of the ten Cygnets built were impressed and used as trainers to fly the American-made Douglas Boston bomber. By 1946 there were only four survivors, and 1y 1969 only one, the others having crashed or been scrapped. The last Cygnet is preserved today at a museum in Scotland, painted in WWII livery.

The last Cygnet, plus two civilian repaints from very rare photos, are included in this 1/87 kit, rescaled with kind permission from Roman Vasilyev ("der Kampfflieger") from his 1/72 original, once available as a free download.

Here's a sample of pages from the kit, to show the types modeled:

Reworking aircraft models by other authors into 1/87 scale-gal.42-cygnet-ii-1-87-page-5.jpg Reworking aircraft models by other authors into 1/87 scale-gal.42-cygnet-ii-1-87-page-7.jpg Reworking aircraft models by other authors into 1/87 scale-gal.42-cygnet-ii-1-87-page-9.jpg

As usual by now, the kit is made to fit 5x7” (13x18 cm) photo paper for a nice picture postcard size kit. Or you can print on ordinary A4 or Letter size paper, two kit pages per sheet with ample margins. Only two kit pages per model need to be printed on photo paper for cutting out (170-200 g/m2; one A4 or Letter size sheet).

I find this format very interesting, in that you can view these pages very easily on the screen, and include a lot of original photos, three-views, and historical material. The models as such only take two of these small pages each, which means you only have use a single ordinary size page of photo paper to print them.

When viewing the downloaded kit on your screen, all sources are immediately available. Just click on every place it says "Source:…", and you will get there.

How does this general format appeal to you?

Leif

Download the model from the downloads section, here.

Roman Vasilyevs large range of models are available as downloads from Ecardmodels, or from his own site. A few of his free models can be downloaded from an older site.

Leif, Yet another wonderfully amazing model. I like the format that you're using at least as well as I like the actual models.
