mig 21 and his clone - F-5E Tiger

The F-5E was serving in special agressor squadrons as a clone to the mig 21 bis.
The aim was to train the american pilots who flew the Phantom Tomcat and Eagle
against the latest mig 21bis version.

I attach here photos of the two . The F-5E is in the american agressor paint scheme.
Both in 1:48 scale.

mig 21 GPM vs Su- 9 1:48 Hobby model

The mig 21 was developed as a local short range interceptor. The main weapon was the
A2 atoll missle and 23 mm gun which were the standard weapon. In later models the mig 21
was adapted to carry 4 K13 missiles and had a twin barrell 23mm gun in the center line pod.
The SU 9 was the Sukhoy delta fighter which was bigger , heavier and longer than the mig 21.
The loyullka Al- 7 engine was having 10 tons of thrust with AB but at the expense of high
fuel consumption that limited the range . The weapon was consisted of 4 early type missiles
with more modern missiles type with later versions of the SU 9.

The SU 9 is Hobby model in scale of 1:48.

mig-21 and contemporaries

The mig 21 was the most mass produced mach 2.0 jet fighter as almost 10000 were built .
There were many rivals \ contemporaries to the mig 21.
The most well known are the French Mirage , F-104 Starfighter , the british Lightning , F-4 Phantom and F-8 Crusader which were all mach 2.0 fighters excluding the Crusader 1.8 mach. Also there are a couple of experimental jet \ rocket fighters as the nord griffon ,trident
9050 which were french design and the british FD2 which broke the world speed record
of 1132 mph in 1956 and later was used for the development of the Concord .

mig 21 vs mirage - Yom Kippur 1973 war

The EAF mig 21 and the IAF mirage fought against each other in Yom Kippur war.
The EAF operated more advanced mig 21's than in the six day war and most of the mig 21f
were replaced by more advanced pf able to carry 4 attol missiles and a belly 23 mm gun.
Israel had high attrition of mirages due to looses in six day war and accidents.
Due to the French embargo Israel decided to build her own mirage 5 and called it Nesher.
The Nesher was basically mirage III with more fuel and some modifications without air to air
radar but with more fuel and maneuverability slightly less sharp than the original French mirage.
Two Israelien Nesher squadrons were available at the break of the 1973 war.
Toward the end of the war the israeli ace pilot Giora Epstein was in a very long
dogfight with his Nesher against several mig 21's. One mig 21 attract his mind and he decided to go on him. He started the fight and opened the after burner of the atar 9c and tried
to sit on the mig 21 tail. In order to get reed of him the Egyptian pilot flew very crazy
maneuvers and every time Epstien tried to put the pipper on he broke violently. After a couple of minutes of such a chase the mig did a sharp dive from 6000 feet trying to make a loop.
Epstien knew that the mig will not be able to complete it and watched for the inevitable crash
that is going to happen soon , all of a sudden he saw the mig emerging from the ground like the Phoenix with dust coming from the ground all over. The mig was out of energy and
Epstien dived on him and shut him down with a small burst of the 2 30 mm canons .
Up to now Giora Epstien is the highest score ace of jet fighters with 17 credited kills
which is one more than Josef McConnell who had 16 kills with Sabre F-86E in Korea.

I put here photos of the two in 1:48 scale.

You may refer to this CGI animation. The altitude the EAF's MiG 21 did a "spit S" was estimated to be about 3000+/- feet. The actual altitude needed for the maneuver is "6500" feet according to MiG 21's flight manual.

I saw the TV series on dog fights. Nice graphics.

Amazing to me is that they were still engaging in aerobatic maneuvers while flying aircraft capable of Mach 2. Not a smart way of utilizing equipment.

Flying a jet at ground level is extremely inefficient and as can be seen prone to pilot error.

Next generation we will let the drones duke it out.

Hi All ,

The first operational mig - 21F was not considered to have good flying qualities at low altitude.
The deserted mig- 21F that landed in 1966 in Israel was tested by the Israeli chief test pilot
who observed like the american test pilots heavy controls at low altitude at a wide range of speeds. The later models like the mig 21bis were much better in that respect.
In youtube there are many movies that shows low level passes at near sonic or supersonic
speed with spectators watching on the ground.
In one of the most memorable dogfight of the six day war two Israeli super mystere B2 downed two mig- 21F at low altitude over the Syrian air force base Siekal.
Although the super mystere was considered underdog in compare to the mig 21F the Israelian
pilots were keen enough to exploit the mig- 21 weakness !

Mig 21 vs F-5E - more photos

As menchnend here the mig 21 and F-5E were very close to each other in terms of performance and handling , body size and even the wing span was close. Therefore the F-5E was
used to imitate mig 21against american fighter planes as the Phantom , Eagle and Tomcat.

I attach here more photos of the two in 1:48 scale.

Great models Yair! Thank you for posting them. It helps us, well me at least, visualize better what you are talking about.
