Mig- 21 007 Ecardsmodels 1:48

This is a build start of the famous mig- 21 f13 that deserted
to Israel back in 1966 and was nicknamed 007 because of the Israeli mosad secret service operation. In the next chapters I will cover this fantastic story.
Some images from the body section build. As the model
is not including cockpit I will add one and the wheels will be in the up position for putting it against the IAF mirage in the air as in combat situation.

In the mid 1960's the middle east was in the inevitable way close to a big conflict between Israel and it's Arab neighbors. The air forces of Egypt and Syria main fighter was the Soviet mig-21 F -13. The mig started to get into service in big numbers and the IAF which operated the French mirage IIIC at the time was anxious to put his hands on it and compare between the two. The help came from a different source - the Iraqi air force started to operate the type as well and the opportunity to get mig -21 was emerged.
In 1966 the americans also encountered with the mig -21over the sky's in Vietnam and they wanted to compare it with the F-4 Phantom as well as the mig -21 was speedy and much faster than the mig -17 which was the main fighter of the North Vietnemese.

Hi Paperengineer - this is the classic mig 21 F-13 of the early type . It was exported to many countries back at the early 60's. One of the odd users of the type was the air force of Finland
where it served along with some Swedish Drakens till the 80's.

The oportunity to get the mig 21came unexpectedly from Iraq. Since 1964 -1965 it was
almost impossible to operate in Egypt or Syria. In 1964 an Egyptian pilot named Heilmy Shames deserted to Israel with a piper that was produced in Egypt named Gumhouria and in Syria the Israeli secret agent Eli Cohen was catched and was hung.
In Iraq the situation was more convenient to operate and the mosad agents found a pilot named Monier Radfa that was a Christian arab mig -21 pilot in the Iraqi air force. Monier was unhappy from the the Iraqi regime that was very aggressive with the Chords in the north of Iraq. The Iraqi pilots were ordered to bomb the Chords villages on a rutine basis at the time.
It was decided that Monier will get a shelter for his family in Israel after deserting with the Mig -21. He gave a range of possible dates for his flight to Israel and the mosad was dealing with the escaping of his family from Iraq to Israel before the desertion took place.
In Israel the airforce chief of staff Moti Hod called Ran Pecker - one of the best mirage pilots
and briefed him about the secret operation.
Then the waiting period started. Ran had to wait with a co pilot each day long hours in the cockpit ready for the siren call. A couple of days passed uneventful. Then in one of the days
the moment came around 10:30 AM . The two mirages were scrambled toward the dead sea region toward the east. When the two mirages came toward the dead sea region they spotted a small bright silver point coming from the east. As it came closer it was observed as a mig-21 . The pilot of the mig waved with the wings and Ran told him by hands movement to
follow him. Then ordered his wingman to sit on the mig tail while guns are on and hand on the trigger button all the time. The strange trio flight flew over Israel for a short duration and
landed in Hazur Israeli air force base. The mig -21 was put inside an hangar and a ceremony took place inside with many VIP's.
The newspaper's and radio stations announced that Iraqi mig -21 was deserted to Israel.

Only they used a wrong airplane ( a Mig-17 instead of a Mig 21, and T-33 instead of Mirages ) . Also, they made up a love story as part of the plot.

I did get to see the actual Mig in Hatzerim museum.
