The bee eye
Good day gents, and thanks once more for your comments! It's been a while as real life also set its demands. But, time for an update.
The nose internals are finished now so the bee eye nose cone can be placed. By looking at the frame parts to be cut out and glued to the transparent part (which I bought separately, as well as the cockpit canopy), this is not particularly a fun job. First challenge is to determine to which extent the transparent cone has to be cut out from the vacuumed sheeting. For this purpose, I used the formers provided with the kit and the paper parts that make up the glass surface. The former assembly fits nicely within the vacuumed part and literally provides a solid basis to cut out the nose cone and to "dress" it with the frame. Then I cut out the outside frame, very carefully and used a green felt marker to color the edges, also a delicate job. I used tiny bits of white glue to connect the frame edges and to obtain a 3D-frame that perfectly fitted around the “glass”. To stiffen the paper, I applied a coat of varnish by brush. Gluing the frame to the transparent part proved to be difficult this way and also that it would be impossible to have a good fit at the fuselage. Somehow the cone was bigger than the fuselage circumference. So I decided to carefully dismantle the frame and to remove its outer rim. First I glued the rim to the fuselage to create a circumferential edge in which the nose cone can be held with the right shape and fit. Trial fit of the paper cone provided good reference for the eventual size of the cone. Then bit by bit glued the entire frame to the transparent cone, dry fitting and as a result of that, trimming of about half a millimeter from its outside edge and a slight correction of the outer frame legs. This all came to a good result. Next tedious task was to install the inside frame, in the same way but then with the outer rim installed on the cone. And finally, finally, finally I was convinced that the entire nose cone could be glued successfully to the fuselage. What a job! The best results can be gained by using clear (all purpose) glue such as UHU to attach the frames to the clear parts. White glue is for paper only and doesn’t work. Excess of glue can be removed by rubbing a finger tip or by using the tip of a small wooden stick. Wait a short while before doing so, then it will be easier to remove the small balls of glue. I’m glad that this part is done. Next would be the cockpit glazing but I leave that for the time being. Too many delicate things poking out. First the rest of the fuselage. It’s time for a simpler job. Erik |

Holy Cow, Erik. And I complain about making a petal design. That canopy is just great. The whole model is really coming along.
