Smile Aeronca L-3(O-58)

Friends over the weekend I worked on another quick project. Very inspired by the excellent work that Jan Kytop has done with its "L" plane constructions, I started a small series of 4 different devices. The first is the Aeronca L-3, which I already had the opportunity to build one in 2022, a repaint of Rata in the colors of the Cuban Army during World War II. You can see about this model here.

As I explained in the construction of the Cuban plane, the secret is a good alignment of the fuselage and attaching the windshield before gluing the cowlling and wing. With a few adjustments, the model is simple to build. Note that I use an X Acto blade (or equivalent, in this case a Chinese copy) No. 3 for sharp and intricate cuts like the wing struts that come with a support arm integrated into each strut.

Here we see the finished work, the only additions were the tail support cables and radio antenna. This model is #3823 in Bruno's catalog and represents an Aeronca L-3 (43-2658) in service with the Free French in Algeria during the second phase of Operation Torch. As with many American planes ceded to Free France, they initially retained US insignia with some evidence of use by the French such as the tricolor rudder.

This model was cut on my vacation during my stay at Hermenegildo Beach, prepared on the last occasion I was at a collective workshop at my modeling club, the CCCP, but finished between Saturday and Sunday at home, given the fact that since Last week of April we did not meet because of the climate tragedy that is happening here (all the confreres are well, they were not directly affected by the floods).

Some more size comparison photos and on a base.

For those who want to purchase Bruno's L-3, here is the link:

I also recommend the excellent repaint of Rata with an attractive sharkmount:
