I'll stick to my way of recoloring/upgrading. I make these models/recolors mostly for myself, so to me designing parts I won't use is a waste of time. In 1/100 it's really unnecessary to have all these little details separately. But this is just my personal opinion. About the wheels, it's actually not a problem to make both types, but most of these Dutch P-40s had those hub covers removed, so I did the same thing with my recolor. However, my second Kittyhawk, Mk.IA version RAAF, has hub covers.
