Yakovlev Yak 30-MaksArt
Continuing my first generation Soviet jets,
Yakovlev Yak-1000 YG-model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-...on_jet_fighter So far I built the Yak-15, Yak-17W, Yak 1000, Suchoi 9 ( 1st designation ) and Mig-9.Those I have. In addition, I built the Yak-17, Yak-23 and the Lavochkin La-15. However those last 3 were given away as gifts. Note: I have built multiple versions of the Mig-15. However, those were really generation 1.5, but are considered first generation fighters as well. here is my next build. It is the Yak 30 first designation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakovlev_Yak-30_(1948) A bit background. Yakovlev design bureau was looking to go beyond their very first jets which were a Pod and Boom configuration ( Yak 15 , 17 and 23 derivatives ). Those earlier jets were adaptation of piston powered aircraft in which jet engine was grafted to the nose. A better location for the engine was in the middle or in the back of the fuselage. Yakovlev design first came up with the Yak 19 which had a straight wing and tail like the FJ-1 Fury of the US Navy, or the Dassault Ouragan. However, that plane was found to have shortcoming and was not suitable for operational use. The next version retained the wings, but had a swept tail. While better, it was not good enough. The next version was the Yak 30 which is the subject of the build. That aircraft had the wings and tail surfaces all swept back and a more powerful engine. While a better plane, it was decided to go with the Mig-15 design which already entered production and surpassed the Yak design. I will build both the Yak 19 and the Yak 25 later on as well. All those are available for download from MaksArt. My Yak 30 kit however was purchased in printed form printed by YG company. Isaac

The kit
I purchased the printed kit published by YG company from GPM in Poland. It is an average kit of relatively simple but elegant construction suitable for anyone that has some experience building paper planes.
The parts are all monochromatic simulating bare metal ( but not convincing as they are more light grey of color ). However, I found it to be pleasing in layout. Also the entire model fits on 3 A4 sheets with the rest having good computer generated graphics. Here are some pics Note: This and a few other designs are from MaksArt and available for free downloads from his web site. However, they are not 100% the same as the YG published printed versions. I will build the downloaded versions of the Yak-19 and Yak-25 and compare later. Isaac

Fuselage parts
The fuselage is a simple set of rounded cross sectional pieces.
parts disks Note: For whatever reason, this one as well as some other of MaksArt models have no glue tabs in the axial direction ( front to back ). However, those are straight pieces and easily made. When gluing the tabs for open section around the cockpit opening, make sure you orient them properly. But in reality the parts are all round, so it makes no difference. Here is the center section with the cutouts for the main gear wells. And all the rolled sections ready Isaac

Fuselage construction
We will start from the back section and go toward the center section first
Exhaust duct is simple with only two parts glue the aft fuselage sections going forward insert the exhaust then insert the aft frame continue forward Isaac

Another great build. I look forward to the day I walk into the USAF Museum and see the Isaac paper model display. They may have to add another hanger to accommodate the collection.

Fuselage forward sections
At this point, I am shifting toward the front where the air inlet is at. The reason is that this model construction needs to have the forward and aft fuselage sections meet at the cylindrical center from either side.
The nose section contains the inlet, the splitter and the landing gear. There is also provision for the gun ports, but I decided not to add those. here is the nose section, note the nose gear landing gear bay cut out. and inlet parts installed going aft now add the nose gear bay housing and reinforce the sides with card stock. Also, I added a small weight to make sure the model sits properly on all 3 wheels later on. now close it up with the rear disk 1.17, however, either it is too small diameter or the gear bay is in the way and the part is too small. Great looking fuselage, Issac. I didn't know that the Yak 30 was so small. It will be interesting to see the size difference when the Yak is added to your MiG-15 collection.
