Gloster Javlin vs Vautour SO 4050 1:48
The Vautour and Javlin belong to the same era of the mid 1950s . This era was the golden era in jet fighter development !
I am starting here a review on both and each one of them !!! The models are from WHM for the Javlin and my mate Yoav Hozmi that you all know very well for the Vautour. Yair |

Vautour SO 4050 - The French Phantom
The Vautour was in many ways a very special plane.
It had 3 versions all of them successful - day fighter , all weather two seater interceptor and a bomber with a glossy front. Among the advantages of the Vautour at the time we can list : Very long range of over 5000 km . Ability to fly with only one engine to conserve fuel. Internal bomb bay with sliding doors. SUPERSONIC in a shallow 4 degrees dive. Service ceiling of over 50000 feet. 4 tons of bombs could be carried. Served as a test bed for new weapons in the IAF . Things that were not so good. Complex plane and 15 hours of maintenance per 1 hour flight. The Atar engines had high specific fuel consumption and low power compare to the British Avon engine. The prototypes with the avon reached 40000 feet in 4 min while with the standard atar it took 7 min to reach 40000. All in all we can conclude that for his period the vautour was a unique fighter with many advantages over his contemporaries. Yair |

Gloster Javlin - the harmonieus drag master !
The Javlin entered service after 5 years of prolong development that took almost 5 years. Because of it's wide body and thick wings it suffered from a lot of drag and in order to achieve supersonic speed had to make a very steep dive unlike the Vautour !!!

Thank you very much for sharing these models, and the others.
And these are models, interpretation of reality: colors, patterns, approximations, designer bias, purpose of the model, and information available when it was designed. Did you enjoyed doing the model, did I enjoyed looking at your model? Yes and yes. Thank you again for sharing all those very nice models. ps: Check paper models as propaganda: [URL="http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/vintage-models/35332-paper-models-propaganda-during-spanish-civil-war-22.html#post691826"] |
