Hi Ray,

I think the video link was caught by the forum filter, if there was one...

To be clear about my question, I have attached a picture of Orlik's paint scheme, with two actual schemes that I have seen in photos of the prototypes at different dates. My question was about whether Orlik's scheme existed at all, or if it was a mix-and-match between historical schemes?

Ok, I see what your meaning. I cannot find any definitive information.

However, it is possible the schemes appeared at different times.

It is hard to tell with the old photos.

"My question was about whether Orlik's scheme existed at all..." Yes & no. The model, of course, is of the first prototype #278845 which differed from #46 and #47 in small mods as well as livery. The fuselage markings of the kit show #45 during a transition period from one style national insignia to another and re-placing of the a/c serial to the aft fuselage. I found this, during a Google/quickie-wiki search, to be accurate. However, at no time, would the "new" star & bar national insignia be found, on this aircraft, at any time, on the top of the right wing. Just sayin....

And, yes, your efforts here are much better than were Curtiss's there. Bydand,

In the meantime...

Good call on the wing marking. It is the mirror image of what it should have been, and would almost be impossible to fix. I have given up on this one from the start XD

I decided to re-colour the vertical stabilizer. Thus that had to wait... But on the other hand,

The propeller was one of the few places where I'd pick alcohol-based glue (UHU Por) over white glue. The blades are fabricated with a rolled paper core in order to provide a circular section at the root, and the blades are made with a twist to simulate washout at the tip. The shrinking (and wetting) effect of white glue is extremely strong and would not be suitable in places where internal gaps should be retained. The mismatch at the blade tip is a result of me adding the twist to parts designed without one, and is promptly trimmed off.

The control surfaces also go on. Neither the propeller nor the control surfaces are made to move, just in case they droop in the future.

The landing gears are detailed/corrected according to actual photos of the aircraft (the gear bays were left as is). I think they added considerable detail to the model. The front gear doors are shut when not in use, as per the actual aircraft. (These did not fit at all and needed a lot of trimming)

The exhaust pipes are added. I actually mistook the orientation of the pipes and had to redo them - they fit either way

Details were added to the pedal area of the cockpit (a bar above it, and a panel between the pedals), together with a ballast filled with steel beads as the model was tail-heavy.

Excellent work! You have put a lot of effort into making this model as accurate as you can. It looks great.

Very clean build. It's a great looking model despite the wing markings.

(Also it's out of stock everywhere.) Given the chance I'd like to design a new one if there is enough material to reference, or when I get the chance to see the real thing at the Udvar-Hazy center...

Still I'm surprised to hear the model being called 'old'... For cardmodels I had always had the concept that hand-drawn kits are 'old' and all things drawn by computers are 'new'. But, of course Isaac you are right, times change. Speaking of which, the Ascender model specifically states that it is 'designed by hand and traced by computer'. Little wonder then...
I've been designing by computer since the early 2000s, so computer designed models could be considered old...in a way...

So... Correction to the vertical control surfaces. It only happened now because I had only just bought a new printer. Tried my best to colour-match, but best isn't good enough. Better next time I guess.

The canopy on the XP-55 is simple enough to not require vacforming. Still I decided to do it anyway so there is less stress in the clear sheet, should it try to spring back while I'm attaching it to the fuselage. Tracing the canopy parts onto white card (a box from Lady Grey this time), the gaps are sealed with superglue and ready to be filled with plaster.
