1/72 Fiddler's Green SNJ-3
Hi guys and gals. I been away from the forum for several weeks - vacationing, then trying to catch up around the house from all the stuff I didn't do 'cause I was vacationing. In the evenings I worked on a Fiddler's Green SNJ-3 (also AT-6 or Texan or Harvard) expecting an easy, relaxed build - NOT! . It took two attempts to come up with a model that I wouldn't be embarrassed to display.
This is an earlier FG release, and it has design and accuracy issues. My biggest beef with the model is the canopy which is way too big for the model. It's too wide which makes it sit too low on the fuselage, and it extends too far forward by more than a quarter of an inch - a lot in a 1/72 scale model! That being said, it definitely captures the "feel" of the airplane, and it's readily identifiable as an SNJ-3. I always try to come up with a display base that will enhance the finished model. Since the SNJ-3 was a navy trainer, I thought I'd try to find a vintage naval aviation recruiting poster to incorporate into the base. What I ultimately decided to go with isn't exactly a recruiting poster - although it would have inspired me to enlist (yeah baby!). I found a pin-up girl rendered in the style of WWII nose art, painted by period illustrator Earl MacPherson. She looks like a young Marilyn Monroe, posed on an airplane wing with early war air insignia. I think her white cap lends an overall naval feel to the image. Now that it's all done I'm afraid that no one will even notice the airplane :D

Don,
A very nice build, though, despite your observations. Accuracy issues aside, that's what I like about the FG models - they DO capture the look and feel quite well without too much building. |

Thank you for the favorable comments fellas. The model has its shortcomings, but somehow with the base, you hardly notice A little diversionary tactic on my part.
