F21 Sea Hornet by S&P 1/100
Next up is a work in progress, the F21 Sea Hornet. The original Hornet was intended for Naval use but became the fighter bomber version an evolutionary step from the famous DH Mosquito. It shared the wooden construction but had up graded engines and more refined aerodynamics. The sea Hornet was developed from the hornet with a re-enforced structure and folding wings and beefed up landing gear for carrier landings. The F20 was a fighter bomber version then came the F21. this was built with an add-on radar nose and back seat operator intended for night fighting and ground attack. I think there was an F23 that was built for photo-recon use.
The F21 from S&P is a real gem of a project. The fuselage is a series of oval parts with a cone shaped nose radome that slides on the nose. I built up the canopies and tail surfaces. these were some of the easier [arts of the build... |

Thanks all for the encouragement. I've always loved the FAA dark grey over white color schemes. Next up are the wings. Looking at this design the oil coolers are built right into the wing roots. there are markings on the coolers that show where you have to score. My suggestion is to score heavily right before you actually break paper. then fold these crease tight. pre glue then glue them and keep them clamped until well dry. if you don't the sharp little creases become un done. the rest of the wing is folded over in the usual manner, set aside to dry, ie work on something else for about an hour!

Good tutorial on the wing construction.
Sorry, I thought the light color was Sky, but the later EDSG and White scheme was also good-looking. Don |

some of the other things to work on while the wings dry. The spare fuel tanks and the landing gear. there are quite a few parts, but they are all simple cylinders, struts and discs. I layered the wheels to add a more 3d look to them. at this scale it seems a little overkill but overkill is highly under rated!
