RWD-5bis by MON from 1957
And now for something completely different...
A bit of clarification needed: Some years ago subject of legal ownership of old MON ( Ministerstwo Obrony Narodowej or Ministry of National Defence) was finally sorted out. They are in the public domain for individual use but still prohibited from commercial use. MON did publish a lot of models between mid 50s and mid 60. Some were reprints (either direct or improved) of Kranich models but some ,like this one ,were ground up new designs. When Maly became popular MON slowly stopped publishing models but from time to time old ones were reprinted in small runs. I use to see them in early 80s.They were expensive but better done and on better card than Maly. Model represents plane SP-AJU that was flown by Stanislaw Skarzynski in March of 1933 from Saint-Louis, Senegal to Maceio in Brazil. It was a FAI record at the time for the planes of this class and I couldn't find out if that record still stands. In a way this is was one of very, very few instances when Polish and Brazilian histories intersected RWD 5 - Wikipedia Model on pictures is scaled down but otherwise all original colors, shapes and design/ printing mistakes are there. It's a bit of a relic and there are far better new kits of this plane available so there is no point in messing with old kit. It was designed in a very strange way and I had to junk some internal parts and made new ones but model looks remarkably well I think. I'm sure I could reduce it to 1:50 and with some changes it could be a very modern looking kit. Not bad for 65+ year old kit. Enjoy the pictures. Click for much larger one. |

Thanks for posting these photos. The various RWD designs are especially interesting to me. Thanks again.

From what I've read RWD design of 5bis was nothing but a scaled down Fokker airliner with many improvements. What's remarkable it worked just fine except it was 1931 and depression hie everyone hard.

Certainly one can see similarities between unrelated aircraft. The Aeronca K and the Piper J3, for example.

Nice work Karol.
My first and only encounter with this plane in model form was with the old ZTS 1/72 plastic kit. It really appealed to me and actually got me interested in exploring further the Polish aero industry of that time and finding, despite being little known in the west, how prolific and advanced it was.

Aeronca and Piper build wings very differently. I did build ZTS Plastic model of it too. I still have one unopened box somewhere. It's amazing what you can find on flea markets |
