Douglas DC-9 in 1/72 scale
Following my build of two repainted Skyline models CRJ-200 in 1/72, I really enjoyed the design and decided to continue building more of those models I had. Normally I build mlitary jets in 1/33 scale, but started building airliners in smaller scale a few years ago. I know that at 1/33 airliners tend to be really large, but for me the 1/144 , 1/120 or so are a bit too small. So I have some of the Skyline models in 1/72 and will see how it goes.
For this build, it is an Eastern Air Lines DC-9 series 30. It is pleasant looking plane having a T tail and two engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage sides. I recall flying on many of the Eastern Air Lines planes including the DC-9 along the east coast of the USA. Also the many shuttle flights between NYC and Boston. Eastern Air Lines has been out of regular service for many years and only the name remains, however it is not the same. Eastern Air Lines - Wikipedia Here are some photos of the DC-9 in Eastern colors. Here is a link to the design of this model by Sumato Skyline Douglas DC-9 (1/72) My build log will follow. Isaac

I'm glad you are doing the Eastern color scheme, Isaac. It was very good looking to my eye. From 1981-84, when I was stationed in the Pentagon, I used to do a daily run across the Memorial Bridge and around the Mall. There would be a steady stream of these pretty airplanes (and others) passing low overhead as I crossed the bridge.
I also built some small-scale plastic models of 727s and 737s, including a couple of Eastern DC-9s similar to those in your images (can't remember the manufacturer or the scale, although they must still be around, buried in the basement). I also have the Skyline model of the DC-9-31 N8952E and will probably want to try to build it when I see your under construction, although I am sure that I won't actually do it. But I will enjoy yours. Don |

Eastern had a god operation going for them. However, their management toward the end did not know how to work with the employees and there were numerous labor issues. It was then sold to people that had no real interest in the airlines other than turn it to a cash cow. And Frank Borman was not the right person to fix it ( just because he was an astronaut did not make him a good manager of an airline ).
Anyhow, the build is next. Isaac

The model
The parts are relatively simple and the fuselage is rounded, so nothing fussy there.
The illustrations are clear and very helpful. The model was printed on top quality A4 card 160 gm weight in best photo setting on my Epson 630 printer. Isaac

Isaac,
I always love to see a Skyline model. You do fantastic builds and build threads, so I'm really looking forward to seeing this one come together. Gary

Great Isaac! Good to see this again. I truly enjoyed building this model 4 years ago. Are you going to install the luggage holds with opened doors? Don’t forget to put some weight in the nose otherwise the model will tilt!!

For this build, I will not open the details up. I will keep it simple because I wanted to see what the model will look like and also, I want to ease into the airliner models. I may consider a future build that will have the doors and flaps deployed. Maybe even thrust reversers. As for the weight, Yes, I already added sufficient weight in the nose to make sure it is not a tail seater. Isaac

Rolling the fuselage parts
Here are the individual parts. All rounded.
Forward sections aft sections and center section. I used a large wood down to assist in gluing this long section. Isaac

I have had the JAL DC-9 printed and formers laminated for several years now. Your build
is inspiring me to dig it out and get started on it again. I will be watching your build as a guide for my own efforts. Good luck!
