Fokker F.XXXVI - 1/100

A second coming, this is. No one has seen the first one.Well, until now. It is not bad. it certainly isn’t bad. The shape is great, the parts all fit very well.

(PS. Nevermind the hand in the brace, I had some temporary trouble with my tendons or joints in my hand but that is gone now.)

It was the print that made me stop.
I must have messed up the settings. With printers, I always end up being like a Quixotic figure, fighting, shouting and cursing the darn machines. When robots finally will take over this messed-up world, I will be put on trial for insulting them so severely, I am sure.

Anyway, far advanced in the building process already, fuselage, wings and empennage finished, I looked at the original sheets on my laptop again. And I found so many detail was missing, I immediately was disappointed in my build. I just couldn’t go on. there wasn’t any other option than to abandon it. right after that decision, a moment of doubt followed, as always: Should I actually abandon the build? Start something new? But no, this plane has something special. It is a wonderful shape, a very rare plane and it is Dutch. The design is very well executed and so i decided to try again. Quite unique.

So here we go again:

Step one: reprint. I chose different paper (matte photo paper 180 gram (which means I will have to sand the ‘skeleton’ further back because the paper is thicker.)) and better settings (of course). Ruler test checked out: all pages were of similar size and scale and the print was so. much. better. Look at the difference in detail and the crispness of the lettering. Hurray!

So, framework. Cereal cardboard box, simple 80 gram A4 paper with the parts, and some cutting and pasting. And drying. Weight on the parts for a somewhat straight shaped set. I did all this before so I guess this time it went a little faster.
The ‘skeleton’ of the Fokker is sturdy and perhaps maybe a little over-engineered. But it sure gives the plane a lot of strength. The flat shape of the fuselage and wing spars are given body by the cross-section inserts. Pieces of cardboard are placed laterally between the parts to provide sturdiness and prevent skewing.

The tail section is perhaps a little tricky because of its small parts. When the frame is ready, you might think the ‘cladding’ with the skin might be peanuts. But prepare yourself for some sanding. Nothing fits perfect immediately, like Chris already said. You need to sand down the frame at least a millimeter all together. Quite a new experience for me.

Wings were built first. I added a thin layer of paper over the central section of the wing skeleton to give the wing section a bigger glue surface. The wings fit perfectly and went on without any problem. The building advice to use a little water for bending the wing was amazing and worked surprisingly well.

(more on that late, I promise.)

The fuselage is very nice and easy to build. Good fit. Chris provided glue strips and they actually go over the spars and bulkheads of the skeleton. You have to sand the frame down a bit. What I did was to create the middle half-section first. Strips on the inside on both sides.

Then I worked my way towards the front and tail ends, one segment at the time. Where the cockpit will come you’ll get this indent in the hull.
Then the first section behind where the wings will come. The next set of tapered parts also can be constructed as one single part and then slid on. Just make sure the skeleton fits inside.
Next is fitting the wing inside the cradle. It should be snug, but not super tight. Over the wing go two caps to follow the shape of the hull.

While the nose awaits its cladding, I did the tail section.

I look forward to seeing the rest of the thread.

Don (Author of multitudes of unfinished threads, in my case, because I have yet to finish the models.)

So, there we go. The cockpit was edge glued, and when cured, the rear was attached first, and leter on the front. Worked like a charm. There was some tension on the structure but with some glue it holds fine.

Next, I messed up the wing. So I printed out a new one. One of the greatest feats of this hobby, if you ask me. With the experience I gained from previous wing, I made a very pretty new one, now using the Q-tip with water technique. Just a tiny amount of water at the Q-tip and one quick stroka along the leading edge and the paper bends like cooked spaghetti.Put it away in a way the curve remains in the paper and let it dry. Once dried you have a perfect curve from which you can easily take it further to its final position. Wahey!

Then the propellers. I used my always a little different technique of rolled-up paper strip with room for a pin inside, some tiny beads and the stuff provided by the kit itself.
I added some extra detail with the silvery cylinder blocks.

Well, then it went fast. Or maybe I didn't take enough pictures. I kind of finished the Fokker in one go. The props went on and then the wheels. I used many layers of thick beer mat card and made a crude wheel which I then put on my powertool and sanded it down to its definitive shape.I added some small details like the hinges on the ailerons.
So there it was, I finished it the 8th of august of last year, 2021. So a little more than a year ago. I still like the looks of it. It might be the sturdiest plane in my collection. And i again learned a lot of new techniques. I never have made such an elaborate frame.
Good practice for Maxim's Myasischchev Geophysica i still want to build.

So, there it is, one whole year after I actually finished it. A great big Fokker. Absolutely no pun intended. (-; Good fit, maybe a little over-elaborated framework, great textures, very well documented, Great colours, so I recommend this one.

Thanks Chris, for this model!

Great results and, as you state, well documented.
Thank you for your build post. It was worth the wait, PK.
Cheers, Ant.
