Great recovery Dan. I hope that everything goes smoothly going forward.

Thanks, Gary. I was glad to be over that speed bump. Now, it's on to another one!

The nose section is...challenging! The motor mount is rather delicate and it's hard to keep it really square. Things are fitting, but it's a slow process adding a bit of glue here, some more there (after drying) and then shaping some curve and adding more glue etc., etc. I think I'm slowly getting it, but this is the hardest part of the build thus far. And it's critical to how the thing looks in the end so any mistakes will really ruin things.

Going well...just slowly! I hope to get the nose finished this weekend. Stay tuned.

Dan

Thank you very much, Sergio!

Well...I got the rest of the forward chin done. One shot is supposed to give you the idea that I basically cemented each piece individually. I cemented everything along the bottom on the left side before putting in the engine mount to give me a positive indication of where to actually cement that structure. Then, I slowly put in each of the small skins on the right side. They were each a little long and needed some trimming and thinning but I think it all turned out pretty well. It looks better in person as the digital camera is evil and pics up specks of dust and glue! This was all butt joints and they worked out very well. Again, the engineering on this kit is pretty phenomenal.

Finally, I did start making the cylinders as you see in the final picture. Steady as she goes!

That's a very tedious job Dan, well done! It looks like a complicated model for a WW1 aircraft.... but all these details will be rewarding in the end. Keep up the good work!

Excellent result in that tedious part as Erik said. It looks very good. I hate modern cameras, they show little things that we cannot see with the naked eye.

Thanks so much, Guys...

Here is the engine in process. Still needs a few more details like the spark plugs, plug wires and compression handle...not to mention the exhaust! But is is looking mighty busy and very much like a Mercedes.

More soon...Dan

OK, just have to ask. How do you get those gorgeous smooth curves on the intake manifolds? I have NEVER been able to get paper to bend like that.

SB...

I cheat! Actually, it's some old wire from defunct ear buds. They are sort of bendy, kind of conform to a shape and it's easy to glue them with some CA and accelerator. So it isn't paper...just some plastic covered wire of the right diameter.

Sorry to burst all bubbles. I aint that talented...!!

A bit more tonight...with less cheating!

I worked on finishing the engine by adding the spark plugs and wires and then I started on trying to fit the "metal" cowl parts. They worked well with lots of sanding and fettling I think, again, because the paper I've used in a bit thick and so going all the way round a former adds up by the end! For example, the chin piece was not matching up to the top panels until I really, really thinned the panels and also did some thinning/surgery on the fuselage nose. It all worked out in the end, though.

In one shot, you can see I put arrows where you need to match up the top panels. Notice the coloring is slightly darker. The designer is a madman! They butt up perfectly and all the "metal" parts fit over those darker areas. Sweet. The final shots show all panels on. The lighting makes it look like there is a HUGE step on the left side, but it's not bad in real life. Still needs a bit of trimming but I'm pleased. On to the tail next for a change of pace and then the guns/cockpit edging!

Cheers,
Dan
