Wings and some other stuff

Thanks Maxe!

Continued with the build, seemingly not much progress but it's slowly gaining momentum again. I will not redo the left wing, only the right one as it turned out to be twisted a bit, with the wingtip pointing down. Worked on the structure of the right wing, which is a lot of cutting - spars, profiles and reinforcements. It's not finished yet.

Furthermore installed the wing fairing at the left wing but the dry-fit revealed that the bottom side is a bit too short and needs extension. Made a cut and approximately half a cm of paper will have to be fit in-between. The internal structure of the wing has been glued now to the skins. Once the fairing has been corrected the wing can be glued onto the fuselage. I have dry-fitted the wing including engines to the fuselage already and I can already reveal that's really a wow-moment.

Also added a few details aft of the cockpit area, the astral-dome and air scoop.

To be continued.

Erik

Left wing

Continued with the left wing, and I found it easier to already have the wing fairing installed at the wing before attaching it to the fuselage.

During several dry fits of the entire wing to the fuselage I noticed that the fairing appeared too tight, necessitating an “educated cut” to ensure it would eventually fit properly. A few additional millimeters of skin will have to be placed in between, as is indicated by the arrows.
Also, wing former LR1 needed to be repositioned slightly. This is not attributed to the model itself but more a consequence of the wing attachment method I prepared before, with sleeves running through the fuselage. Note that the model as it is available for sale has a box structure at the central wing section - remember that my version is a test-build!

Wherever possible I doubled the skins for reinforcement. Then came the big moment to finally attach the wing to the fuselage. I used acetate glue as it dries somewhat slower than white glue, giving you a bit more time to make any corrections. At this point I didn’t glue the wing fairing yet, which I only did after thorough drying of the wing attachment for 24 hours.
The correction of the wing fairing gap will be done after installing the flap.

Then came the engine nacelles, which need some trimming to properly fit on the wings and to allow proper placing of the fairings between engines and wing. The engines should be placed in parallel to the fuselage, which forms a good reference line.
After several rounds of trimming, I was fully satisfied with the inboard engine and glued it to the wing. Wing fairings 53/53a do not entirely fit at the ends and need a bit of correction with scrap paper, but that’s not problematic.
Wing skirt 33p should be glued to the upper part of the nacelle before placing it to the wing, this provides more surface area for accurate aligning and gluing. Bottom skirt33q to be already in place at the wing before gluing the nacelle, as it provides a kind of curb for the lower half of the engine nacelle.

Next will be the outboard engine. It's already shown on some of the pictures, but it’s not yet glued to the wing at this point.

Erik

I am looking at the photo showing the two wing spars stubs. Looks like it may be too light to support such a heavy wing assembly to the fuselage.

What do you think?

Does it need additional support ( like a wood center spar )?
