So just say the nose was replaced, it looks like a good fit now.

Isaac,

You performed major "skin grafting" to the nose. You did an amazing job on the surgery. The colour doesn't match exactly. However, each aluminum panel would have a slight variation in colour anyway.

My point is that you did a great job on correcting a significant problem.

Nice Recovery!

Gary

Painful Isaac, the nightmare of every paper modeler. I agree with Gary, you saved the model very well. I wouldn't worry too much about the off-colors. They don't show that much as such in the pictures. Most important thing is that it fits right now.

Regarding the bin temptation (a different kind of temptation compared to the nose lady with her merchandise exposed so openly), I once smashed a B747-300 after quite a few frustrating hours of misfits, too thick paper, off-colors in the print (KLM-blue....), glue stains, and I admit, my own inexperience with complicated models. And you know what, it was a big relief, but most important, one learns best from own mistakes .

Cheers,
Erik

Red face Wing

So on with the build.

Here is the wing structure.

The entire frame assembly plus the landing gear bay fits in the lower fuselage cut out

Here is the wing. The aileron will be separate.
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_3751.jpgF-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_3752.jpg
I was not sure about the leading edge slat separation at this point.

I added additional card on top and bottom of the inner wings structure to smooth the wing when it is glued to the fuselage.

I now glued the wing onto the frame and fuselage using a non water based glue ( UHU ).
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_3755.jpg

unfortunately the result I did not want happened here and the wing skin absorbed the UHU glue and warped it.

At this point, my frustration level has reached a point that I was done with this build.

I placed the whole thing in a tray and placed in the closet. It remained there for months.

I suspect the following causes for some of my misses with this build :

-Something with the paper quality was a bit off.
-I sprayed the paper with acrylic clear and that may have conditioned the paper to the worse ( speculating ).
-I was not in the right mood to build and I screwed up.

This is a rarity for me as I don't recall screwing a model this badly before.

This concludes my screw up phase.

I did pick this model back up two weeks ago and decided to continue and see if I can somehow salvage this build.

This has certainly been a challenging build. I hope you are able to salvage the build. If anyone can do you, you can.

Ganbatte!

Exclamation PTSD assessment

"Post Traumatic Stupid development" of this build needed to be assessed.

After months in the closet, I decided to look at this model and see if it can be somehow fixed.

First, I removed most of the wrinkled wing but kept a portion on the frame to help smooth the new wing.

look at the grafted new nose ( this will not do )

I will need new wings and a new nose again later on. For now it stays.

Exclamation Wings-take two

After removing the wrinkled wing, I had a new set of left and right wings printed on 210 gsm paper ( which is heavier than the normal 160 gsm used ). I still had a good right wing, but the color mismatch would have been obvious and thus Two wings of the same print phase are used.
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5080.jpgF-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5081.jpg

Here is a comparison with the original wing colors and the new wings which are lighter.
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5082.jpg

I added a small wood stick to the trailing edge to stiffen it and prevent warping.
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5083.jpg

wing is ready
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5084.jpgF-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5085.jpgF-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5086.jpg

I had to trim the wing root because, it did not fully conform and left exposed areas on the bottom. That area will be attended to later.
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5087.jpg

other wing
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5088.jpg

Now both wings are on.
F-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5089.jpgF-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5090.jpgF-86E Sabre Hobby Model 1/33 scale-img_5091.jpg

At this point, I decided to just work on the model as is with minimum effort.
Based on that decision, I elected not to incorporate the separation of the leading edge slats. If I ever build another F-86, it would have the slats for sure.
