The reason for the periscopes was simple: in planes designed for long-distance records or adapted, space to store fuel was essential, so windshields were unnecessary since the plane was designed for just one purpose or at most adapted, this is the case of Ryan NYP if we take the common series version: the Ryan M2 we will see that the fuselage is different because of the fuel, even placing the pilot more in the middle of the aircraft.

Great work my friend!

Ironically enough, a century later, the confluence of severe streamlining demands upon modern supersonic airliner concepts and advancements in digital video as well as image processing technology are just now driving the renewed employment of "periscopes" for pilots in the latest designs.

Here's Le Criquet's beautiful rendition of the Golden Age French record breaker Bleriot 110.
Easily one of my favourites of his many French types.
Various gauge heat element wire (comes on little reels cheap from Ebay) for rigging and aerials. Made a little set-up for displaying the model in both static and 'in flight'.
Le Criquet's website has changed but his models are still available free to anyone who wants one. He is a member of this forum so all you have to do is contact him via Private Message with your request(s).
Thanks for looking!

Beautiful bird and very educational posts. I still like your Breguet XIX "Point d'Interrogation" better.

Gorgeous, pristine model! Great idea on using nichrome heating wire. I'll have to try that when I attempt a model with rigging.

(Understandably Le Criquet seems to gravitate toward the prettier of the French designs, though I have a fascination with some of the spectacularly ugly interwar military aircraft like the Amiot 143 "gondola bomber." Wonder whether anyone has made a plan for that monstrosity.)

Apart from the historical interest it represents, this model is full of difficulties: inverted heart-shaped fuselage with evolving cross-section, wheel fairings, numerous inscriptions to match from one element to another...
So congratulations on this assembly, which requires a great deal of skill....and patience.
As our friend Rata points out, I'd be delighted to offer it to those who want it to do something other than sink into oblivion at the bottom of a hard drive...

Thanks. I've been using that wire for quite a while now. Doesn't corrode over time, bends and cuts easily, comes in various gauges for small and large models and responds well to the PVA white glues I use. Only downside is it comes curved off the reel and needs to be straightened.

I share your interest in those French inter-war military beasts. The only model of the Amiot 143 I'm aware of was the old Heller 1/72 plastic though I'm sure someone has produced one (along with the angular Bloch MB.200 and 210) in card at some point.
S&P has a good number of French military types from this period and WWII- the Potez 540 and 650 spring to mind.
Le Criquet's main focus seems to be on one-off civilian types which pleases me no end as it's unlikely any other designers would do them!

In addition to the tip communicated by Rata, I'd like to point out that antomologist needles are available from 0.2mm diameter, in natural or black steel. The disadvantage is that they're only available in 35mm lengths, but they're perfect for short lengths (control cables or shrouds on small biplanes, for example). Piano wire is also available in 0.1mm diameter, but in coil form, with the disadvantages mentioned above...

Need to fix some minor issues but otherwise pretty happy how this repaint went: Nobi's old 1/100 Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat.

His original was a free model so the same will go for this. I just need to get onto Nobi for permission to publish and share....
