Continuing the build, the tail surfaces go together well if you take your time. Lots of bends in the leading edges of the horizontal stabs and elevators. I just built them as designed, so they have a flat faces where they join. The cockpit was a bit tilted when the wings and tail surfaces where added. I ended up ripping it out and building everything else, then adding it back in.

I would highly recommend printing out a scan of this model instead of building the printed pages. I ended up building the fuselage and wings twice before it looked correct. Even then, I would give my model a 3 out of 5 rating due to it's rough exterior. In the end, I just had to admit it's only a paper model, no need to make it a museum piece.

For a little change of pace, I'm building the Schweitzer 1-26 from Fiddlers Green. The model is scaled at 1/25, so I shrunk it down 76% to give me a 1/33 scale model. Like most Fiddler Green, there's no internal structure, just bend and fold it until the lines look about right. The nose cone has both petals and nose cone. I opted to leave out the cone, it's not necessary. I use circle templates to help close up the petals. The instructions say to glue the canopy to the fuselage before adding the wings. I didn't, since it is easier to align the wings with the canopy off. The wings have no internal spars, so go together quickly. The graphics don't always line up, and the model is of a very early version of the !-26. I think I will come back to this model later and give it a modernization and a repaint.

Here she is all finished up. If I do a repaint, I will add a cockpit too.

Next in the build que is the SZD-16 Gil from GPM. It has 2 pages of parts and 2 pages of instructions. It is obviously designed by a different individual than the earlier GPM models. The control surfaces are designed into the wings and tail surfaces instead of being different parts. I had a few fit issues, there is a gap between the seat and the cockpit floor, and I had to cut the inner frame in half to get the cutouts for the wing spars to match up with the slots in the outer shell. The wheel is more detailed then the earlier models. The wing structure now includes a wing spar and a box structure.

The Gil seems to be progressing nicely! I see you make the wing skins as pockets that the box spar can be inserted in, I think that's a good idea and will probably use that method when I build another of these designs (in my Czapla I swept the skin around the box spar without pre-gluing it into a pocket, which worked but was a bit tricky to align correctly). By the way, I think many of the GPM gliders were designed by a person named Zbigniew Salapa.

I do like this method of wing construction. The spar gives it strength, while the box gives it shape. Keeps the glue from bleeding through to the outer skin.

The nose cone of this model wasn't designed very well. It's made to be petal type, but the petals are a separate piece. I would recommend the nose cone be cut into the individual petals and glued to the fuselage before attempting to close the petals up. I did not do this, wanting to build the kit stock as designed.

The markings on the rear fuselage section showing where the wing's trailing edge should be wasn't anywhere close to the actual wing trailing edge is located. The glare shield in front of the instrument panel also didn't fit to well. Cutting down the internal former where instrument panel is mounted would have made the glare shield easier to fit.

I tried to make a clear canopy since there are no compound curves in it's construction, but I couldn't get the curved section to remain curved. Guess the canopy is going to have to wait until I get some new vacuum form plastic.

Overall, the model looks nice when done. Looks like a fun airplane to fly.

Here's the fleet so far. What's that DC-2 doing in the shot? Guess I will use it as a tow ship.

For a little change of pace, here is the SZD-20X Wampire II, designed by our own Aaron Murphy of Murph's Models fame. Like most of his models, there are no frames or bulkheads. The model takes it's shape while being glued together. The downloaded kit has 4 sheets of parts and 1 page of instructions. I recommend building the wings first, then gluing the fuselage onto the wing. The model is 1/29 scale, so I shrunk it down 76% to get a 1/33 scale model. The model as shrunk down still looks too large compared to the GPM models. I will have to break out the ruler and check the real scale once I get done.
