Canopy-1

Thanks Petestein, Tom and David - much appreciated!

Regarding the DC-4, the model has already been published but as I go along the landing gear I will definitely provide some tips, tricks or improvements.

Back to the Dauntless canopy. Although not difficult, it's simply a lot of work to cut out the frames, trim the clear parts, edge-color and glue the frames, inside and outside, to the windows. I've been using UHU for this and any excess glue can be quite easily be scraped away with the tip of a skewer, a couple of minutes after gluing the frames. By doing so, small balls of semi-dried glue can be rubbed away gently from the surface.

For me it also works well to apply (matt) varnish to the frames before gluing them. After drying, the varnished frames are somewhat stiffer and stronger, so less change of damaging.

As the model has such great cockpit details it would be a pity to close off both compartments, so I decided to open the canopy as much as possible. The only disadvantage of this is that not much is seen of the hard-worked windows, but one has to make a choice, and an open canopy suits the model simply the best.

How the closed canopy would look like is shown in the dry-fit in the first three pictures. Thereafter, step-by-step the build-up of the open situation. It's still work in progress and it looks like the front windscreen will be the most difficult one to fit well onto the fuselage. Also, the cockpit main window still has to be glued in place. Something for next time....

Erik

Absolutely fantastic. No words are enough to describe such detail and excellent work. Very few people, I'm sure, have your talent and patience to make such a model. Congratulations. Hope you go back to the DC-4.

Hello Erik. Windows frame work can be seen enought for those eyes who pay attention and know the model. It's great if cockpit interiors can be seen and the model has extra value as you improve it. Admire your skill, it's an Impressive work.

Oh wow that canopy draws your eyes to the cockpit, where you can then see all the wonderful detail in there. Great work.
