Wings - Part 2

Thank you Doug, Chris, Tom, Homer, Dan, Tino and Salvador! No, I haven't started yet with punching the holes in the flaps. Maybe I should, just to spread this monotonous task over the coming few weeks or so.

The right wing is essentially the same as the left one, but a bit simpler as there are no landing lights to consider. The pictures tell the tale.

The last wing related parts are underneath the central wing section. To maintain the correct shape of the long semi-cylindrical parts I glued a slightly narrower strip of paper on the white area where the part has to be placed, which gives a bit of an edge to glue the part against. I also used small strips of thin paper to join the cut-out edges from the inside. Altogether not particularly mind-blowing work but very effective for a neat finish.

Finally a few pictures of the wing details. The running lights at the wingtips (still need to add drops of white glue to create light bulbs), the landing lights and also not yet detailed with a drop of glue, the formation lights on the wing tips.

All in all the model is not so small (or my hand is small ).

Cheers,
Erik

Excellent work with nice photos.
However, in that 5th image, it looks like you were ready to "discard" it.
What happened there?

Hi Mike, no worries. I only used the waste bin as a stand for the model, to keep the right wing in the desired upright position during drying of the glue. It wasn't a failed test flight .

Thanks Isaac, that's a great picture. I'm always surprised by the fact aircraft like the Dauntless were actually pretty big. In the mean time I've found the right tool for punching the holes and the tedious job has started, in between the regular building process.

I used the small punch and small hammer, the process wasn't that bad just time consuming. Be patient the whole process will be rewarded after all. Good luck

More inside details

Hello gents, back again for a last update before going on holidays. Thanks for your reactions!
Tom, I bought a "hollow pipe" set recently to punch the holes in the flaps, and also have various revolving punch tools. Up so far one flap is done by using the revolving type, with hole size 2mm. Fits exactly, and the job is not so painstaking at all .

The build continues with a few more cockpit/gun pit details. Starting with the superstructure in between both compartments. The pilot's head rest, must have been very useful during catapult starts. I pity the gunner, he didn't have such protection for his neck. Quite an elaborate assembly with many small parts. The two parts that stick out on either side are supports for the center canopy.

Then the hoisting sling, which is a piece of wire painted in metal finish and located around the pilot's seat.

Lastly, the piece de resistance of the interior, the gunner's seat. A very fragile assembly that needs to be wedged in between two ribs. Again I pity the gunner: Not even a normal seat, but just a hammock to sit on.
On top of the pulpit-like ring the single machine gun will be mounted. The assembly is not completed yet. All parts are in place but paint touch-ups and a protective coat of varnish have yet to be applied. First thing after the holidays .

I have not yet assembled the gun yet, and it will only be placed after the model is complete. Simply too fragile.

Alright, that's it for now. See you back in a month's time.

Cheers,
Erik
