Isaac,

You're off to a great start. I don't like the butt joint method, I don't think that the result is as nice.

It would be nice to see a B727 with afterburners.

Best of luck.
Gary

Cool Exhaust

Switching directions now and going to the very aft of the fuselage. There are two features there. One is the afterburner exhaust and the second is the thrust reverser module.

Here are the reverser parts

assembly

add the attachment arms

here is the engine exhaust / afterburner ( or reheat in British English ) :

SAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-img_7056.jpg

Both assemblies here.
SAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-img_7057.jpgSAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-img_7058.jpg

There is no details to either assembly. It is all pen lines rendering. However, for this vintage model it is OK.

NOTICE :
Do not glue the reverser unit at this point. I waited to finish the entire fuselage before attaching it due to its relatively weak connection until the wings and upper hump/fairing are in place.

Engine info

For those interested, The Volvo Flygmotor RM8, is a conversion of an off the shelf P&W JT8D powering commercial airliners. Due to its large production numbers most of the technical issues have been worked out and only the integration of a new afterburner was needed. That kind of engineering reduces the technical risks to the aircraft program by not having a new plane and a new engine combinations.

Volvo RM8 - Wikipedia

pictures from the web here:
SAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-rm8-engine.jpg
SAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-goteborg_volvo_museum_09_rm8.jpg

The thrust reverser is part of the aircraft and not the engine. However, the thrust lever selection operates together . The reverser unit uses 3 clam shell doors ( almost like orange cut in half and its skin cut into 3 sections ). The reverser unit is quite heavy and useless in flight. However, the short field landing requirement demands it.

Here is a picture from the web showing the Trust reverser module. This aircraft is at rest and only one petal is down due to hydraulic pressure loss on the ground. When the engine is on, all hydraulic systems are powered and the petals are in the stowed position. During their deployment, all three close and shut the exhaust flow from going aft and divert it sideways and forward thru the openings to eliminate forward thrust which is not needed during a landing roll.

You construction/assembly on the exhaust looks great. Well done. It would be nice if the artwork on the kit was a little more modern.

Thanks for the info on the RM8 and the thrust reverser.

Exclamation Aft fuselage

The extreme aft fuselage will be formed using the exhaust section already made and the section in front of it with the integrated rear wing spar into the frame. Since this is a butt joined design, you must use the parts as is.

add a section
SAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-img_7062.jpgSAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33-img_7063.jpg

here it is next to the exhaust section which can be glued on ( but joined ).

Exclamation Fuselage mid section

going a bit forward, this section also houses the main wing spar/landing gear bay

mid and rear sections ready

both are butt joined. ( it's a good thing that there are many white sections that would be hidden from view. This is where small errors can be placed in order to get a better fit on the colored sections ).

Nice work Isaac. The butt joint seems to going very well for you on this kit.

Exclamation Mid section

The fuselage mid section is the transition unit from the two side air intake to an oval shaped aft.
