I commend your very thorough exploration of SCADTA-Avianca history.
We have a slight family connection: in 1971, my wife and children flew from San Francisco to Seoul, Korea, via an Avianca flight (I believe it was a Boeing 720). It was a wonderful and memorable experience. The crew were very friendly and helpful, the flight was comfortable, and the food was delicious. Don

1950 Catalina PBY-5A.

Aerovías Ramales Colombianas was founded on October 30, 1939 under the leadership of Captain Hans Hoffmann, Captain Fritz Herzhauser and a group of German technicians. Hans Hoffmann was a German aviator and sailor, who had come to Colombia hired by SCADTA. He had married the daughter of the Minister of War, José Domingo Arango. It was precisely his father-in-law who provided him with the money to start the operations of a new aviation company. With an operational base in the city of Villavicencio, ARCO initially acquired a Beechcraft Model 17, with registration C-48. SCADTA having merged with SACO in 1940 to create AVIANCA, all German personnel had been forced to withdraw from commercial aviation and were replaced by North American and Colombian personnel, under the supervision of Pan American Airways. To prevent any attempt to reorganize the German Pilots and Technicians, the Colombian government sponsored the purchase by Avianca of ARCO's assets. The final negotiation was signed on April 26, 1941

Herr Hans Hoffmann also founded in 1959 a company called HANSA with a beautiful hotel in San Andrés island called Hansa Club Villas. He started operations in 1959 with a beautiful yellow and white PBY-6a Catalina. I know this because I have a friend of mine who flew to San Andrés island in December 1959 in this Catalina and piloted by Herr Hoffman.. The Catalina was beautifully restored with a very nice interior. The flight took 6 hours. three to Barranquilla and three more to San Andrés. The Catalina is very slow aircraft . What happened afterwards to this aircraft, I don't know. v

A real shame Avianca is no longer Colombian, as it had a great past and is linked to the development of the country during most of its history.
