Metallic Fiddlers Green B-24

Howdy,

Years ago Chip sent , as a surprise gift, his Fiddlers Green B-24. His envelope contained four metallic printed parts cards. I have rediscovered the envelope numerous times while shuffling through storage folders and finally figured it was time to have some fun with it; started an audio book on my radio and began cutting out the parts from the four cards.

During the build process a damp Q-tip easily removed excess Aleens Tacky glue
without damaging the printed metal surfaces. Figured this might be important enough to mention.

I only added paper strips as fairing to the wing root attach points.

There were no props or landing gear with this early kit. I decided to keep it as is for now.

Surprisingly this FG B-24 model with its 15 inch wingspan is quite sturdy for having no bulkheads.

Nice build. I didn't know that Chip had this in the postcard format. I'm surprised that it didn't include a clear sheet of the 'spinning props' though. I built his metallic B-17 that he sold in booklet form (1/33 scale?), at one of the paper model conventions in Virginia years ago. It was destroyed not by enemy fighters but by my young grandson soon after :-)

Although your model appears to be a B-24D, in its metallic glory it reminds me of the Strombecker solid model of the B-24J that my Dad and I put together around 1950. I still have the little "Consolidated Vultee B-24 Liberator" booklet with the yellow cover from the "Strombecker Library of Famous Models."

There have been a lot of old memories stirred in the Forum recently with threads about Lou and Barbara Dausse and PMI and Saul Jacobs and the Carmodels website, and perhaps that is why I find your pretty B-24 model so evocative.

throughout my youth building stick and tissue models by Comet, Sterling , Guillow, and Scientific, provided indescribable good feelings.

Plastic arrived but without those feelings. I indulged heavily.

Then Fiddlersgreen card modeling was introduced by an IPMS member known here as David Okamura; this led also to PMI, Papermodelers.com, and the return of again; indescribable good feelings. Is it the challenge? Is it the compelling desire to do better? Or is this just an addictive hobby?
