Martin-Baker Ejection seat

Hello friends,

Back to some model building after too long a break, although I have been lurking and keeping up to date with all of the amazing projects.

I bought Mike's M.B Mk.7 seat from Ecards about 10 years ago and struggled to complete it purely because there were a few different techniques that were new to me.

Anyhoo, I have restarted it and this is the build so far. I detracted from the instructions somewhat in that I didn't laminate a lot of the parts, made up some new parts and changed the display base.

I didn't laminate the main seat parts, just glued them back to back. The yellow piece is the life-raft container with a sheepskin cover made from DAS modeling clay. Firing handles were manufactured from cut-down Q-Tips with a spiral of yellow and black paper. The seat pads ang launching rail were completed as per instructions, but I have changed the colours of the rail and seat to match my references.

Details added to the seat from strips of paper, unrolled Q-tips and small blobs of PVA.

The oxygen bottle was turned from birch dowel with details from scrap card and Q-tips, painted with acrylics and a generic decal downloaded and printed.

The main problem I have had is with the construction of the Parachute Pack. I found it a bit flimsy for my ham fists, reinforced it with some grey board. As can be seen, I have I have filled the surface where the paper shrunk. Filler here is DAS modeling clay (a great medium and it's made from paper!).

The base was reinforced with custom made part from grey board.

Looking forward to getting this beauty together.

Interesting project, Bernie!

Are you going to build a Phantom II around it?

Tex, Mac and Don, thanks for stopping by. A 1/12th scale Phantom would be a daunting prospect, but Mike Dixon produced a mock-up of an F104 to put his seat in. check it out here: Martin Baker Ejection Seat

I have all the main sub-assemblies put together and just starting on the complex seat straps. However, Mike's comprehensive instructions, as seen in the affore-mentioned post, should make this an enjoyable task.

On with the pics. #1 the straps ready to go

See you all on the next instalment.

Hi all,

Thanks you all for stopping by and having a look. I am calling this one done for now, just the RBF ribbon to attach.

I finished off the rocket-pack with the manual detonator cord. Also visible the stationary launch tube.

This is the revamped base......

......and the seat mounted.

Martin-Baker Ejection seat-20230808_224335.jpg

I have fabricated a fixing bracket for the seat to the base which allows the seat to be lifted off.

Martin-Baker Ejection seat-20230808_224408.jpg

The helmet is made from the pattern supplied in the kit, sealed with super-glue, filled and sanded before painting and attaching details from card and soft solder

Hope you enjoy the product of what has been a very enjoyable build.
