Koolhoven F.K. 58 by WAK (1/33rd)
All,
Idle hands do nefarious things so I've started this guy as a simple break before starting a more involved project. The art work on this is stunning. There are tubular steel parts in the cockpit, for example, that look absolutely 3-D but are just painted on. Great shading and weathering adding lots of depth. Plus, I've always liked this airplane and built a rubber powered flying model of one based on a 1930s plan. Flew great! So I started the engine which was very simple but enough detail to look good in the cowling. It's part flat paper art and part 3-D cylinders and heads. Push rods finish the illusion. Looks just fine to me. More soon...Dan

|
Don't underestimate how realistic well-printed detail can appear (the Martin flying boat I've just finished being another example). In this case the designer came up with an excellent construction for a part that will be only partly visible in the final model.

Hi Dan, a Koolhoven! That's a special model!
Frits Koolhoven as Dutch aircraft designer and manufacturer always stood in the shadow of Fokker at the time and for that reason was far lesser known. His role as aircraft manufacturer abruptly ended when the Germans bombed the airfield south of Rotterdam, where his factory was located, on the opening day of the attack on 23 The Netherlands on May 10th, 1940. Only one FK aircraft has survived until this day, a FK Bantam. The FK 58 was reasonably successful and the last type of aircraft built by Koolhoven. Cheers, Erik

Since this a Lech Kołodziejski design, it should go together well. The subject is a bit of an ugly duckling, IMO, but Lech does lean toward obscure types.

Thanks everyone! Erik: I built a small free flight model of the Bantam too... guess I have a thing for Koolhovens! The Baboon too...
 A bit more. Really fits superbly so far and is a nice relaxing model. Much easier than your Heinkel, Kurt! More to follow. I think the cockpit will be next...Dan

Interesting obscure plane. Looks somewhat similar to the French Bloch MB 152 fighter of the same era.
