The diesel nine
Hello all, I donīt have to explain what a dc-9 is...
This project is to build and improve the well known Skyline Iberia Douglas dc-9. I will also enlarge to 1/33 scale, correcting some things and adding a lot of details that this big scale allows. Some parts will be completely replaced and some other will be added. In fact, I will build two models: The first one (in late 60īs Iberia delivery colors). I will use this first model to test the new parts and all things. I am not going to use the metal adhesive paper in this first model for two reasons: - I have never built a model with metal textures simulated. I want to have one in my hands to see how it really looks. In the pictures, these models look nice but only when they are on ground. If you hold the model and look it from below, the ilusion disappears and you only see a big dark grey belly. As the 1/33 scale models usually finish hanging from ceiling, It is supposed that you will see that ugly big grey belly. But anyway, I would like to give a chance to these models and see what happens. I will try to do my best own to do the fake metal texture seems real bare metal using some tips. -The second reason is because I am interested in build the model as fast as possible cause this is only a test model to improve and add new parts as I have said above. The second model will be the same aircraft but in the Iberia 70īs livery (that is the one I used to fly as a child in summer time almost every year with the cargo bay plenty of ensaimadas from Majorca). Itīs the one with the IB circle on the tail and very similar to the delivery colors one. For the first model I have choosen the aircraft that is in one of the few pictures I have got because this livery with the "Iberia" titles on the tail was not used for a long time and was replaced soon by the circle logo. I am going to change the textures and panel lines of all model. In my opinion, the model has a good volumetry except for some parts in the tail and cockpit windows that sould not have to be curved (like a tristar or CRJ). The 3 main cockpit windows on a dc-9 are flat with angles and not curved like in the model by default.
The panel lines look nice overall but are not the real ones of a dc-9, including engines, tail and specially wings. I have been working on separate parts first and I have build the engines that I will leave alone waiting for the final steps of the model. I wanted to see how this fake metal looks when it is really in my hands and not in a photo. |

TRICK: I have sprayed (ooops!!, dangerous for me) a layer of Tamiya gloss clear that improves a little the metal looking. Not bad, donīt know what you think...

Iīm going to start with the tail section that needs a lot of modifications. The tail is completely new and the tail cones will include a operative rear stairs.
First, the internal structure of the tail. Adhesive over card as seen in the images. Self explanatory. |

Now, the tail skin. Again, the printed glossy adhesive over light grey cartuline. The LIGHT grey is important as Iīll show you in the future.
REMEMBER to fix the adhesive part along the axis in which the cartuline bends more easily to avoid wrinkles in the leading edge of the tail when forming. |

WOW! The engine nacelles and the horizontal stabilizer look great. The Tamiya clear gives the aluminum nice depth.
