P 51 Halinski/ModelArt
Howdy
Yes, the P 51, it was on my mind quite a long time in many versions, but i guess this one was just balance 'tween get-it-asap and make it presentable. And yes im beginning to changing my ways a little - I mean paper grade. With this one, it is still some 80 g which on later shots would prove "disaster" generally in the cocpit area (and some other places to for that matter). |

P 51 part II
As the kits are downladed ones from the internet, I was wondering how close in the terms of scale they would be.
As it turned out, in case of Halinski kit, I printed out needed parts of the cocpit and wheel wells via the Paint. By jove it did take some time - one page per 3 minutes (perhaps my PC is to balme), but as it turned out it came out in right scale. Now I didn't remember why, but the printouts were done with the printer set to lower quality and thus most of the details are gone (in the cocpit). I know, yes, that wasn't brilliant... |

P 51 part III
With the cocpit ready (up to a seat and side walls) the whole thing
ended up shelved for some three months. Finally having succesfully finishing the Ka 50 (the fact that I ended a kit boosted my morale tremendously) the P 51 come back to life. Due to the fact that the Halinski instrument panel didn't show much beacuse of the way that i printed it, I use the ModelArt part combined with bits of Halinski. The gunsight (done accordingly to manual) comes with a glass but You won't see it - as usual. Ok with the cocpit ready, comes the easiest part - fuselage. |

P51 part IV
Generally easy and quick built.
One setback, underneath the cocpit, ModelArt have half bulkhead to which later on will be assembled air intake unit. I admit, I didn't glue it right on the money (it is offset less than a mm to one side) but the hole fuselage south of the wing lower surface is bent toward left (as I later measure this on the uncut part there seems to be some discrepancy of 0,5 mm). So perhaps it's just me or the kit. Be my judge. |

P 51 part V
The wheel weels have few parts from Halinski, the just look to bare
for me, so have the wheels covers. As the wings are fragile with this kind of paper, different approach was needed when it comes to wheel legs. I didn't put any wire into the legs, just glue the wheels stright to the legs. It definately isn't going anywhere, but at least it hold it's weight (for now). |

P 51 part VI
I was to lazy to paint the wheels, so instead I use charcoal on them.
Of course most of it would rub off but some would stay, fine with me. Bomb racks done, with these I take the shortcut too. Guards which protect the ordnance from swinging sideways should be made from wire, phew too sophisticated, double layer of paper strap would do perfectly for me. |

P 51 part VII
The prop arrangment looks a bit crude but at least it works.
In case of excessive play there, extra layer of cardboard could be put between fuselage and prop hub. The weathering. I was wondering about using the charcoal for that to, but I decided to stay with proved ways. So as a semi qualified arsonist I managed to burn some plastic without setting everything around on fire, while holding some alluminium foil above fire to catch my weathering medium. It goes pretty fast now on, gun powder stains, engine exhaust, some vents on the fuselage, the area of wings near the cocpit on which pilot tread while climbing into his office. |

P 51 part VIII
And so we have it. All in all it takes a little les than 28 hours during
a week or so (excluding those three months when I didn't do anything on this kit). Not that bad imho. Some errors of course but mostly due to the paper thickness. And even a real weathering - I bring it to company to show off a bit and of course on this day it have to snow. The first snow so early in the year. Thanx, despite my effort to protect it, the model get some. Fortunately not much but the camouflage already dissolve in the contacted area. On the last pictures the P 51 is accompanied with some expetionally long term project. As far as I remember it start in 2001, and with pretty slim chances for finish. The scracth built Fw 190 D9, with one single aim - to make the best Dora. Pretty modest I know. Some 1100 parts total in 1:33 scale. If Youre interested I could post som pictures of it. Cheerio |

Great work! I like the weathering detail.... Nice touch with the dirt around the cockpit area!

Still wish those squadron codes weren't wrong. Good looking job on the kit though!
