Defending America

[/B][/B]Defending America
During World War II, most of the American Continent was threatened and attacked by German U-Boats and by Japanese aggression.
In this thread I will discuss the different aircraft that were involved in this theater of operations during World War II, which covers several combat zones such as the East Coast of the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Panama Canal Zone, the West Coast of the United States, and the anti-submarine war in Brazil and Argentina.
It is worth mentioning that I will rely heavily on the book - Latin-American Air Wars and Aircrafts 1912-1969 - and research done on the web.

Fortunately we have the kits of almost all the aircraft involved in this topic. We thank my friends Pericles Lopes, Garry Gillard and Jaromir Smid for their support.
This topic includes no less than thirty models involved, which are:
1.- Curtiss P-36 Hawk
2.- Boeing P-26 Peashooter
3.- Douglas B-18 Bolo
4.- Hamilton UC-89
5.- Bell P-39 K Airacobra
6.- Curtiss P-40 B/C Warhawk
7.- Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress
8.- Consolidated LB-30 and B-24 D Liberator
9.- North American O-47
10.- Curtiss O-52 Owl
11.- Caproni AP-1
12.- Northrop A-17
13.- Consolidated P2Y-3 Ranger
14.- Douglas A-20 A
15.- Douglas C-49C (Wright-Cyclone Powered Airliner)
16.- Fairchild UC-61Forwarder
17.- Junkers J-79 (Junkers Ju-52)
18.- Boeing XB-15
19.- Luscombe UC-90
20.- Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina
21.- K-Type Blimp
22.- Curtiss-Wright T-32 Condor
23.- Focke-Wulf Fw-58 Weihe
24.- Vultee V-11
25.- North American NA-44 (NA-72)
26.- North American B-25 D Mitchell
27.- Douglas O-38
28.- Curtiss Cyclone Falcon
29.- North American AT-6B Texan
30.- Vought-Sikorsky OS2U-3 Kingfisher
31.- Stinson Model O Senior
32.- Type VII U-Boote
33.- Type IX U-Boote
34.- Fu-Go Balloon Bomb.
We start with the P-26 Peashooter model at 1/100 scale based on a design by Gary Gillard aka RATA and a repaint by Tigertony100.

A very interesting subject.
There was an old TV documentary series called Victory At Sea that had one episode about South America.
Victory At Sea: Beneath The Southern Cross

This thread has everything to be a success. I'll think of something to contribute to the topic.

Meanwhile, a beautiful P-26 José, I really liked it.

Ooo, if you find a Boeing XB-15 paper model plan, I'd be delighted. If you happen to make one, I'd be ecstatic.

Sprightly little Peashooter there, fun stuff.

This looks like the US equivalent of the RAF in East Africa: hand-me-down obsolete crates that were kept flying in primative conditions with tea and duct tape. Except the Americans probably didn't have tea.

Well friends, I'm going to start my contribution to this topic. "The defense of America" or rather of the three Americas is a broad and varied topic, José is sticking for now to the area of his neighborhood which is the Panama Canal region, I will stick for now to the defense of Continental North America and the defense of the Brazilian Coast in the south. The model that I'm going to show you now is not new, it was built in 2015.

When both the United States and Canada were involved in World War II, they did not have an adequate airborne anti-submarine weapon or doctrine. Its sea patrol aircraft were generally seaplanes and until 1942 there were not enough aircraft to cover the immense number of square miles of territorial and coastal waters that were infested by the German submarine fleet.

A good example from the beginning of the campaigns was the use of the Hall PH-3 Aluminiun, an obsolete seaplane used by the US Coast Guard on the east coast of the country, further north. The PH-3 is a direct descendant of the Curtiss H12/16 from the 1st World War, for combat it was totally unsuitable, it was used until 1942 to rescue shipwrecked people.

Models in 1/100 scale from Murphs Models.

Another aircraft widely used by both the US Navy and the USCG until the end of the conflict was the Grumman J4F1 Widgeon, this small airboat was initially used for patrol reconnaissance, liaison and rescue of shipwrecked men near the coast.

Model Muphs Models build in 2013 or 14 in 1/100 scale.
