When I ordered the original Yak 38, I also ordered the vacuformed canopy. That was around year 2004 or so. Thus I already have it. but..... I decided to make a mold anyway using the original canopy just in case the original is damaged. The original though has aged and is not clear anymore. I was looking for my Pledge clear floor polishing, but could not find it. I gave up and used the original canopy. Specific info in my next post. Isaac

Looking good! The wing area is so small that makes me remember the F-104...

I purchased the model and canopy some 20 years ago. So here it is still in the original packaging.
![]() ![]() I noticed it is a bit opaque and was concerned that it would be damaged. I normally dunk the canopies in a floor wax product called Pledge ( in the USA ). However, I did not have any and not sure if it is sold again ( I will look to order it or similar one in the future ). But for this, I decided to use it as is. I decided to make a plaster mold using the existing canopy ( just in case ). I coated the inside with oil and then mixed plaster of paris into a loose mixture and poured into the canopy. ![]() ![]() after drying it is ready for future use. Here is the canopy framed and in place. ![]() ![]() but... another scale issue came up. It looks too bubbly on top. The real plane has a different canopy. Details in the next post. Isaac

The existing canopy that is used with this model is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!
It lookes all puffed up and the frames are not to scale. I susspect that when this model was designed ( probably in the 80's or 90's ). they either did not have good information or just thought it was good enough. Here is the current model canopy. ![]() ![]() Notice the lower frame on the right and left side are much lower than the inlet splitters, and for a canopy that swings open on its right side, this can't be ( you would not be able to open the canopy. see photos of the real aircraft. ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyhow, this is an old model and at this point, I am not redesigning the canopy. ![]() ![]() Isaac

I just started to search for the canopies and this came up on a German site. Apparently there is a newer Yak-38 with a canopy, wheels and laser cut frames. All in 1/33 scale. Looks like a Polish designer though.
It is however in Ukrainian camo. Not sure if it is better, but looks sharp from what I can tell, and it was computer designed ( unlike the FLY model which was hand drawn ). here it is for those interested: YAK-38M - fentens Papermodels ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and the model pages: ![]() ![]()

Isaac, it's unfortunate about the canopy. However, I think that it still looks great.

Answer's models are usually very high quality (in both detail and fit) and designed by experts. However, they tend to be on the pricier side compared to other publishers and their default shipping price to the US is over $30 even for a single kit. I'm currently waiting for them to ship out the MS Model Flogger and Angraf Ukrainian Fencer I recently ordered. Wouldn't hurt to pick up the Answer version of the Yak-38 and see how the design improved over 18 years...

I agree that it appears to be a much better design. I may order it in the future, although I really want the Soviet colors and not the Ukraine version for my collection. I wonder if the German site will ship it faster to the USA? Thanks Isaac

Now, I remember why I did not use the old Pledge Future floor wax to dip the canopy and shine it up.....
So I checked Amazon for the Pledge liquid and it showed it at the outrages prices of over $80 to $130 plus for a bottle. The reason for these prices is that they stopped making it years ago and when my old bottle was done or got to old, I threw it away. I don't know why anyone in their right mind will pay for really old wax ( it is not like wine that ages well with time ![]() Here is a picture of a previous model I build and dunked the canopy ![]() So I searched for an alternative and found it. It is Quick Shine and it is only $11 for a bottle. I placed an order and when it arrives, I will try it. Hopefully it will be the same great results I had in the past. Here is the comparison bottles ![]() Isaac
