Ikarus SM-1, RAS-1 Gaetta and CAMS 30E Atvars 1/100 Betatest
Friends, this season this semester has been flying boats and seaplanes. We are again with an Atvars test of these obscure flying boats from the 1920s. One Yugoslavian, one Romanian and one French. Apart from the CAMS 30 which has a more advanced design, the SM-1 and RAS-1 are based on World War I designs, notably on designs by Macchi and Lohner. All were training aircraft with a secondary capability to perform observation and liaison tasks. The SM-1 had a considerable production run and despite its archaic appearance it was still in use in the Royal Yugoslav Navy in 1941 at the time of the German invasion.

Our construction will be triple leveling by development stages. I am currently building the fuselages, but formers and other parts have already been laminated. Atvars models in general are in 1/72 scale and feature a large number of details, something that makes construction time consuming but with very interesting results is a large amount of gluing edges without flaps. The SM-1 and RAS-1 have box-shaped fuselages with keels and consequently have a similar construction (The SM-1 has structuring formers), while the CAMS, like many French projects of that time, already has a semi-monocoque fuselage with the hull. In the photos we begin construction preparation

We start with the fuselage of the RAS-1, dimensionally it is very similar to the Macchi M9, with an observation post in the nose, construction with faces glued only at the edges, a process that takes a lot of time but can give very interesting results, it is important to note that the formers in the 1/100 scale are between 2 and 3mm made with duplex paper (called Holler cardboard in Brazil). The edges were painted with soft lead colored pencils.

Flying Boats fever or just a coincidence, but this is pretty cool. I'm researching and developing the PBY-1 Admiral. The triplet of flying canoes is developing very well. Bravo to Leo de la Rosa and Pericles.

Well friends, continuing with the RAS-1 I added several elements of the Cockpit, built the lower wings and the tail, like all Atvars models they are extremely precise.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My expectation is to carry out the general construction today, note the struts that support the wing. In this case they are just a simulation but they increase the gluing area which is naturally very small. The model will certainly go to an alignment jig. |

Nice job. That wing and tail rib texturing is exceptional.
