Vultee Vanguard Prototype

This is the S&P 1/100 Vultee Vanguard prototype available as part of a bundle with production Vanguards from Ecards.
I slightly modified and textured the plain grey original to look (hopefully!) a bit more silverish.

Very nice execution on a sharp-looking aircraft! If any airplane could be said to look as if it's raring to go from having a full cup of coffee in the morning, methinks it's this one.

I have always liked the look of the Vultee P-66 and once built a peanut-scale stick and tissue version. This early experimental version looks a little like the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden.

Don, at first glance I thought the prototype was an inline engine affair but it had the P&W 1830 radial used on all subsequent production aircraft. Nicely streamlined and neat but overheating was a big problem.

I can recall Vanguard models but I don't remember seeing this version. Very pretty model.

This idea of prop cone big enough to match cowling was tried so many times by different manufacturers yet none made it into production. It did lead to a compromise that was used in FW-109,J2M Raiden and La-5 and later fighters.
