I'm referring to a book, Fortress in the Sky by Peter Bowers. On page 35 image #5 shows what I think is the same a/c at the "1938 San Francisco World's Fair"?!
Were these 2 different events in the same city, the same event mislabeled, does Bowers have some incorrect info in the figure caption? I have no knowledge of the Golden Gate Exhibition, do you know anything about it? At this point I'm mostly curious, the image you posted is interesting no matter where it was taken. |

This is something about which I know nothing, but the puzzlement about the San Francisco event caused me to do a little looking. I'm not sure about the 1938 date, but apparently the "San Francisco World's Fair" and the "Golden Gate Exposition" were the same event held on Treasure island in 1939.
See this poster (look for the Boeing 314): 1939 World's Fair on San FranciscoBay - Vintagraph - Vintagraph And this photo of the Boeing 314: The Pan American Airways Clipper at Treasure Island - 1939 I've found some footage of the architecture of the event on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYc4rtsFFW8&NR=1), but so far, no B-17 photos. 1939 Golden Gate Exhibition..
The Golden Gate International Exhibition is also called the 1939 World's Fair. It went from February 18, 1939 until December 2, 1939 and again in 1940. It took place on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. My Father-in-law hitchhiked from the Civilian Conservation Corps camp where he was working in Elkton, Oregon to the Fair in October 1939. He has some wonderful pictures of the fair and the camp where he worked.
Sorry to drift off topic! Russ |
