Thunderbolt critics could say whatever they wanted, but the bottom line was very simple - as Hub Zemke said:

"If you wanted to have your picture taken so you could send it home to your girl, you sat in the cockpit of a P-51 Mustang. If you wanted to survive in combat, you climbed into the cockpit of a P-47 Thunderbolt."

Those nine tons of plane around you and huge radial engine were a great confidence booster for any pilot.
Some time ago there was a Dogfight! episode on History Channel where they described an experience of a wounded P-47 coming home straight an level (his control surfaces were shot up) being pounced by a FW-190. German pilot kept on hitting the P-47 and the 'bolt kept on flying until FW-190 run out of ammo :D
Thanks Mike. Yes they were tough, but unfortunately could be brought down... Since you (Gremir) will be coming out with an updated version I may have to think about making another one. Thanks for the nice comment, I'm trying to build as clean as you do, but having trouble doing it. Rutek63 has made me cut more carefully I must say...despite myself. (still using scissors and elmers...just to confuse any newbies out there)
On this one the prop easily pulls out to remove the cowling so the engine can be viewed.

It was fun watching your build. I'm looking forward the final gallery. I must say, your model grew more and more impressive with each new update.

I see he has influenced not only me (my execution is still lacking though:(). I hope we can see soon more tips from him.
