Can I just throw in the Hawker Siddeley (BAe) Harrier. Maybe it's not as fast and agile as others that have been mentioned here but it was designed in the 1960's. The only fighter aircraft that can operate from a jungle clearing. In combat, if someone gets on your tail you just vector into the hover and bung a couple of heat seekers down their jet tubes as they streak by. Then you just turn 180 and split before they can turn round in case you missed.
