Kind of a biased vote here, but after 24 years in Naval Aviaition and my current job, I'd have to go with F/A-18 Hornet. By the way, I'm an F/A-18A-F Hornet/Super Hornet Quality Assurance Rep.

I suppose the question is; What role? Interceptor, Air Support, Deep strike?

The F-16 is arguably the best interceptor of the lot, but the F15 and F18 (and maybe the F-14) are way better in support roles and can hold their own in a knife fight.

I'm partial to the CF-18 myself, but that's 'cause I'm a Canuck.

I tend to like aircraft that have tons of variants so...

- Mirage III/5/50 family (+ israeli and south african derivatives)
- MiG 21 family (+ chinese derivatives)
- F-5/F-20

Come on, people. There is only one jet fighter you can consider the best. That fighter is the F-15 Eagle. It is undefeated in combat. Name another fighter with the record it holds?

And don't try slipping in the downing of F-15E Strike Eagles like a friend of mine always does. There is a big difference between the A/C model Eagles and the E model.

The end...8v)

Though not a fighter, I like the SR-71.

I like to try and imagine what Dave's boat would look like as a jet fighter...

TOMCAT! Win hands down! Six missiles in one go. Six targets smoked. Beat that.

Although formerly of the USNAVY persuasion and loving the lines of the F-14 and the Old Ugly Phantom I have to agree with Ash the F-15 has the best actual combat record of the bunch. It doesn't have the hollywood record of some of the other fighter types, the only movie vaguely referring to the F15 Eagle was Red Dawn, when Powers Booth's character was shot down after downing 4 of the bad guys....

If I had to pick a JET fighter, I think the SAAB Draken and the Fouga Magister have the prettiest looks. And yes, the magister was a fighter, in the IDF.
